I have a terrible decision to make. Do I run a 324 Olds or a 322 in my model A? I love both engines, both are traditional, cool, adequate, etc., etc. I think what I really want to know (since I am not all that great of a fabricator), is which one is easiest to install. The A has an aftermarket frame w/a MII front suspension (I bought it that way, so don't pile on so soon). Obviously, it will be fully fendered. It has a new 351/c4 in it that I don't want to run. Either engine is going to get a 700r4 trans, so that's not an issue. What are the pros and cons of either engine? This is next year's project, so I'm a ways out on this deal. The nailhead is complete, top to bottom, all I have now for the 324 is a fresh short block, the cool valve covers and the spark plug wire holder downers, as well as a good lead on a 6x2 set up. The only advise I will ignore is to but another Model A . Thanks for your insights, info, and advice.
I have to vote Buick, as thats what I like and have. The only Nailhead drawback, is the left side starter (don't know about the Olds) , which makes the steering box mount challenging, but with a Mustang II that should not be an issue. You can tart up an SBC to look look an Olds, but nothing looks like a Buick. They are smooth running, cool running torque monsters and thats a bonus to me.
If I had to make the choice, I would opt for the Buick. I like both engines for various reasons. But, one thing I notice is the rarity of nailheads at most get togethers. From 332 to the biggest, they ooze class. They look great with either chromed or polished aluminum stock Buick valve covers. Just my 2 cents,
blonde or red head........ good thing you didn't come across a caddy motor.................that would be the trifecta of cool. has two motors of different makes ever been put in one car?
Nothing looks better than a dressed out nailhead, and you already have a complete running 322,, problem solved...
Both have the same starter problem so that's a wash. You have a whole Nailhead, so that puts it a nose in front and I would say the Buick is also much lighter than the Olds with approximately the same power, so there you go - 322 is the one. Now, if you use the Nailhead, I can offer that Olds a nice place to stay!
Another thing to keep in mind is the Buick is LONG, if you don't want to do serious firewall/ floor work I would go a different route.
Nailhead has a lot of cool looking dress up and speed parts. Looks fast sitting still. The Olds is just fast.
The only consideration is the balancing on the nailhead...if you have all the correct flywheel combinations,The naihead wins,,,if not,go with the Rocket..
if your going to sell the one you are not using, keep the cheaper one. or advertise them both which ever sells first is the loser.
Blond or red head, Tough choice. Either one will be great, I have had both and like them both. (the engines)
If you want to run a BOP (turbo 350,400, 700R4) trans on a 322 Buick, from my research you need the original dynaflow flywheel to use the adapter kits. Another item to consider if you only have the stick shift flywheel. 322 have a different bell and adapter kits then later 364 & 401's.
Thanks-I have the bell housing and all the stuff for a stick, including a 6 bolt trans. What I don't have is a floor shifter, and those are few and far between. I'd rather drive it with an automatic than have it sit for want of a few parts. Good info on the flywheel.
Some numbers Buick 33.5" long 28 wide 685 lbs Olds 32" long 30 wide 700 lbs Buick starter on left side but with your rack and pinion should not be an issue.
