It's good for a chuckle when we see the fads or styles of the past. Hairstyles and clothes are easily changed. the current tattoo craze not so much.

Gentlemen its' time to demo the mighty power of the HAMB! The photo posted by swi66 above and attached below is a screen shot from a movie called "The Women". I saw it on NBC 'Saturday Night at the Movies' when I was but a wee lad. What interest us all here today is the fact that just about every prototype/dream car from the period is seen as the rolling stock in the film. I'v been looking for a copy of it for years. Only recently I checked all my known sources online with no luck. Somebody be a hero and find this flick!

For his cue stick! If it was a high dollar Willys it would be for the broom stick to hold the hood up.
    Just kidding, I couldn't resist.

    The Man big Daddy

    Daddy1.jpg

Big daddy The date of this image is unknown, but it's certainly one of the great hidden gems in Garlits' files, featuring "Big Daddy" with his family — wife Pat and daughters Donna and GayLyn — and NHRA Founder Wally Parks and his wife, Barbara.

    daddy2.jpg

Garlits has a discussion with Jack Hart on the starting line at the Winternationals in the early 1960s.

    daddy3.jpg

A young Garlits works on his dragster's engine in the Pomona pits at the 1963 Winternationals. Garlits won the race, defeating Art Malone in the final.

    daddy4.jpg

Garlits was the subject of many promotional images sent out by Dodge, including this one from 1969. When providing the photos to media outlets, Dodge included captions for the images. The caption on this picture read, “Top gun gets once over by a young admirer after he climbs from his 200 mph-plus feuler. Don Garlits tours the country with his Dodge-powered dragster taking on the great and near great brought in to put down the king of the slingshots. It’s much like the days in the old west when the top gun was always under challenge. The youngsters must have watched their heroes closely then also … with the same look of fascination.”

    TV Tommy Ivo

    tom1.jpg

“TV Tommy” Ivo. Getting his nickname thanks to his career in Hollywood movies and television, Ivo put as much emphasis on entertainment as he did performance. On the track, Ivo drove a wide range of vehicles, including dragsters, Funny Cars, and a jet car. His innovations, which included his Showboat entry that had four Buick engines on it, combined with the showmanship landed Ivo in the top 25 of the NHRA Top 50 Drivers list.

The Showboat name for his four-engine dragster came from a Hot Rod magazine photo shoot on the set of his My Little Margie television series. The photo featured Ivo and co-star Cynthia Pepper, and it was during this shoot that producers got a close enough look at what Ivo was doing away from the set that they tacked on an addendum to his contract that prohibited him from driving the car (something Ivo got around by using aliases).

    tom2.jpg

The caption on the back of this photo from August 1963 reads, “Tommy Ivo receives his Cecil County jacket for tying with Don Garlits for the e.t. record at Cecil with 7.91 seconds. Presenting Tommy with his jacket is Jeff Lorak, son of the event director at Cecil County. Jeff is 4 years old, and as far as he is concerned, Tommy is unbeatable.”

    tom3.jpg

Ivo watched as inspectors looked over his car on the scales at the top end during the 1966 Nationals.

    tom4.jpg

Ivo posed next to what he called the Psychedelic Top Fuel dragster, which he ran in 1967. According to Ivo’s website, the idea for this paint job came from some scribbling he had previously done in a school notebook.

    tom5.jpg

As described in a caption on the back of this image from May 1968, “ ‘TV Tommy’ Ivo checks out his AA/Fuel dragster before match with Connie Kalitta at Capital Raceway. Ivo won two straight runs with times of 7.39 and 7.68 e.t.”

    Speaking of Connie Kalitta...............

One of the earliest photos we found in Kalitta’s file is this one of “the Bounty Hunter” working on the engine in his car at an event in 1964

    kalitta-01.jpg

This photo, also from 1964, is very likely one of the first photos taken of Kalitta and son Scott at a dragstrip. That's a 2-year-old Scott sitting in the driver's seat of Kalitta's car.

    kalitta-02.jpg

The exact date of this photo of Kalitta taking in the action along the fence in Pomona is unknown, but we believe it was taken at the Winternationals in the mid-1960s.

    kalitta-03.jpg

In 1965, Kalitta won the North Central Division championship. Here, Kalitta, second from left, and fellow class winner Gordon Collett, second from right, were recognized by, from left, NHRA's Bob Daniels, Melody Baker, and Doug Debord.

    kalitta-04.jpg

Kalitta earned the first of his 10 national event victories as a driver at the 1967 Winternationals.

This photo included the following caption on the back: “ ‘Jungle Jim’ Liberman, surrounded by his crowd-pleasing cowgirl and New England Dragway’s lovely queens, joins his thousands of fans in celebrating his resounding victory at the 6th annual Funny Car Nationals. Besides winning the 32-car Burndown, Liberman also set top speed and low e.t. of the meet, 218.9 mph in 6.54 seconds.”

I remember that movie! It was actually called "Woman's World." A real period piece centering on the wives of several guys in line for an executive position in Clifton Webb's character's auto company. Scenes inside FOMOCO and of their "dream cars" along with Betty Bacall make it worth watching.

Look, it's a young Mr. Garrison! Now you're going to feel a little pinch...

  25. First, I checked where the driver was - left side, so nope, couldn't be some wacky brit tea making device.

Then I thought "hmm steam punk elephant gun" - but Sean Connery was nowhere around - so that took out my theory it was a clip from "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen".

    It's a mystery!

Most recognizable body in drag racing.

  27. Probably a pump style oiler/lubrication device. The mechanic may have used it while riding shotgun.
