Yup, ticked me off LARGE too! By the time I had a comment typed up, the thread was shut down... :(

I would be flat-out EMBARRISED to have a thread shut down due to my comments... NOT be braggin' about it as a source of PRIDE.

You said your piece very well, 'Fix, and have NOTHING to aplogize for IMO... but to do so makes you a STAND UP GUY in my book! AND, I really dig your truck and staying with the flat-six... I LOVE any 6-popper regardless of make! :)

I'm gonna move along, before the plug gets yanked on this thread...

I do have a question. If I understand correctly his Merc has a broken engine and his Ford has major electrical problems.Put the engine from the Ford in the Merc? That way he can fix the Merc engine in no hurry while still doing his thing.

Thanx for this post Tim, yes I could not ,"Not" say something, but it's over now, so time to move forward with everything. I would come and pitch in, but over 2000 miles away, have not been to So Cal in many many years, been known to hang in Long Beach,Glendora, Redlands, Yucaipa and Cali Mesa.
I am very impressed with the outpouring of brotherly help, giving without a thought of getting anything in return, except a good feeling of knowing you did the right thing.
Okay here is my trucks engine, its a Canadian engine , so all long blocks here, mine is a 228. I have a 265 destined, and it will be heated up as much as I can afford and keep streetable....all the best

Here is the ultimate example of that except that the vehicle involved is an OT Fiero. If you watch this 6 minute video have some tissues handy at the end....

Very Touching story Lebowski, and this happened fairly close to where I live, but of course being 2 different countries did not see it on our news...

I agree. Unfortunately Tyler passed away a couple of months after this video was made but at least he got to drive the car first....

AWESOME story Lebowski, had to fight back the rain on that one! Funny 'Old Wolf' mentioned tri-five.com... I recall a group of guys there coming together there from all over the country to help a fellow member complete his '55 Gasser build before he passed from cancer... :) I could never take a nickle from helping any of my neighbors, but NEVER turn down a beer or a meal when offered after the task gets done! I am BLESSED with one graybeard hotrodder neighbor who has lent a hand and got me out of the shit MORE times than I can count... I can NEVER do enough for him in return! Time and again, I've seen guys on this site go above and beyone to help each other with parts and help... it's WHY I love the HAMB and being a gearhead! I know for a FACT that good karma comes to those who give back... so I do what I can when I can to pay it forward in life, just as I saw my dad do as a kid.

Thank you 'junkyardjeff' for your offer! We have an offer of a 292 in AZ... Yup, THE HAMB WORKS,!!! :) Also, thanks for the bumps here! -Tim

I believe old wolfs comments are doing exactly opposite of what he liked to see.
After those attacks I'd imagine both cars will be running by January.
I've always said, when I pass, I want to be doing exactly what I love to do.
Highwayman, I wish you Gods speed.

I have been in contact with this fella -- http://yblockguy.com/ he doesn't have a rebuildable core in stock, but, maybe someone close to him HAS one that might consider providing it for a rebuild?

    For at least a 292 if not a 312

And by spring, I'll be able to purchase it from him? [ winter is, hopefully, our BUSY season here -- mother nature willing ]

    Thanks for any help!

I'd liketa continue for as long as I can --https://vimeo.com/114542749 ---- safely DO so.

This was a comment by Old Wolf below on the other thread, blunt, maybe? but I get what he is saying, I do think we need to come to a point in our life where we need to consider, not only our own safety, but the safety of others when doing what we "want to do" Some people are still sharp as a tac (and fit as a fiddle as we say down here) in there 70s and 80s and beyond maybe, but I think we need to also try to be smart enough and reasonable enough to consider others and there children in a different way..... I think the Highway man has done way more than a fair share of good deeds over the years and would hate to see his legacy destroyed after some sort of accident out there, after our encouragement, to keep on....so... Highway Man, You are the Man! so you have to be your own best judge;)

    (Old Wolf)
"Yes 50 years of (playing) and he has never had a incedent. That pretty amazing. But he is now 70. Im 65 and know Im not as sharp as I was. And he is every day placing himself in danger as evidenced by his wreck with the ford. this isn't the 50,s and 60,s anymore. His lights aren't the sanconed type. He doesn't have the police radio the commercial recovery guys do. Its my opinion its best he give it up and stop playing. Its obvious he isn't fiscally able to do so. He has by his own admission been warned his PLAYING is illegal."

  19. old wolf: hopefully when that day comes, you won't meet somebody with a persona like yourself.

The very old saying of "by grace go I", is very befitting, we all very well could be that person that needs that act of kindness from a "do gooder". I myself once was there, and its a Hamb-friendly story.

Close to 20 years ago, I drove my '62 Lark hardtop from Mich to California for a few months after being tired of seeing frozen snowy farm fields out my window. While in Calif, my home base was my cousin's in Bakersfield.

Coming 'home' to my cousin's from Oildale late one night, my Lark hiccuped a few times, then just died. Was under hood with a flashlight trying to figure out what failed. Did not carry a cell phone in those pre everybody-cellular days.

It was not a very nice neighborhood where the Lark died. One glance around and wow did I long for rural Michigan. After a bit a fellow stopped, he was driving some eco-box car and asked if he could help out. I gave him my cousin's phone number and told him to call and give her the message to come get me at this location, I had a tow strap if she would bring her truck. Didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary with the fellow. Well, he took off, in the meantime I managed to figure out my distributor was not rotating. The local lowlifes were watching me with interest (drug and gang type guys).

About 20 minutes later, the fellow who had stopped earlier dramatically showed back up, driving a 58 Ford wagon and said, "hook up I'll tow you, nobody answered the phone number you gave me". We hooked up my tow strap to his trailer hitch he had on the wagon: at 1am we towed my Lark from the outskirts of Bakersfield back 'home' to my cousins.

He wouldn't take any money for his assistance and seemed to be glad to have helped out another old car guy.

The next day I told my cousin the story, and she was like, OMG you were where at 1am broken down in the
    Bakersfield "dells" she called it.

I still count my blessings to this day of being in that situation and being helped. Just the fact of seeing a 58 Ford wagon in motion and pull me 'home' (well, at least to a rust-belt guy, any 58 Ford is rare), and the kindness he showed.

It still makes me pinch myself to this day to realize it wasn't a dream, but rather an act of a kind person, when I was in an unenviable situation.

Edit: Yes, I'm sure towing the Lark back to my cousin's the 5 or so miles early in the morning wasn't sanctioned or heck maybe even legal in Calif. But the fellow helped, In retrospect I am certain I would of had problems with the local lowlifes, had I walked away from my lark it probably would of been vandalized or things stolen out of it.

  20. What he is saying, to be precise, is: "I don't approve of enabling Do gooders no matter who the happen to be."
Doesn't appear to be any reference to age here.

  22. I believe it all boils down to this.
Highwayman has a financial concern in getting his vehicle repaired, as needed.
Highwayman has been assisting folks for many years, inside the law or outside the law, I don't know.
If anyone is willing to assist, I believe Highwayman would be appreciative.
BUT, we don't have the "authority" or the "right" to determine if Highwayman is fit or not to continue, with what he loves to do.
Either assist ...... or choose not to assist.
Let's not play the role of Highwayman's guardian or parent.

I strongly approve of enabling do-gooders no matter who the happen to be, and do so, whenever I am able.

You get out of this Universe no more than you are willing to put in.

If you ever want to be helped, you have to help.

One life, one planet, once chance to get this right.

Will your legacy be one of good, or indifference?

    Now let's find this man a Y-Block!

I will still help him, even if he is not a pleasant person. That's his problem, and I will not allow it to become mine.

I urge you all to rise above, and not set your standards at his level.

RIGHT ON Bob and Gimpy... gotta LOVE your SPIRIT, and THANKS for that!
We have a couple options so far - one in Kingman, AZ, the other near Palmdale, CA. It will be up to Hiwayman to decide, then I'll play off his cue for the next move. He has his eyes on a fresh mill from Y-blockman here, told me it would run $5-6k, maybe he would be able to get it by next spring... man, that is a LONG time to be stuck on the bench. I live in the same town as Thomas, but have never met him in person. From what I can tell, he is UTRA-humble, and I'll guess kinda hard for him to reach out for any help. I know a couple people that could help put the word out to TV and radio, get the hat passed around locally. I bet we could raise a couple bucks here too... but I don't want to rush him into anything, out of respect. It's up to him for a timeline, and TRY to let us know what we all can do for him. I'm 'all-in' for picking up the mill, helping with the R&R, and covering the nickle-dime crap that comes with a swap - or whatever he asks for at the time. I just know he is an ICON around the freeways of San Diego, and I hate to see a good man DOWN!

MUCHO THANKS to everyone here for keeping this thread alive with your good thoughts and offers of help! I'll do what I can to serve in the same spirit that Thomas has for FIFTY years! Take Care, Tim
