The other night my Son and I ran 2 1/2" exhaust all the out the back of the car after 3" head pipes and 3" mufflers. Much to our surprise the Flowmaster mufflers that sounded so good before, now sound like glasspacks with pee shooter pipe's. Now the question for all you old school racer's. Is the tone coming from my car the same as you would have heard back then as compared today ? Click, watch and listen > Sorry can not get video to load :(

I can't hear anything. You might want to check your link. My opinion on the question at hand is that you probably won't get that old school sound out of any of the new school mufflers.

It's not that I'm looking to match the old time sound. It's just nut's to hear my car rapping the way it does. So I'll take this moment and redirect my question. Was pipe rap a common thing with Hot Rods back in the day ?

  5. Most guys would run a bigger tail pipe to compensate for the loss of flow thru bends and the lost velocity as the gas cools.

You've got 3" velocity cramming into a muffler then trying to get out of there thru a smaller pipe. it's bound to sound like firecrackers. Guys used to put pencil tips on to get the pipe rap sound. Those just closed the very end of the pipe up.

Yes, this is the cause no doubt about that. I'm just giggling at how it sounds. Do I leave it or fix it ? I'm for leaving it.

By the way 31 Vicky. Low end torque is impressively better.

I would say it was possibly sought after by some. People tried some crazy things to get a unique exhaust tone.

Yes. I have an elder friend of 85 years of age. He did muffler back in the day. He played with different diameters and muffler length as compared to the other bank to create different tones.

  10. I can only tell you from "my day" that the pipes had a rap, with Smithys glass pacs.
But back in "my day", I don't recall anyone having pipes over 2", in diameter.

What ? Please type louder ! There are different flow master mufflers, some are pretty quiet, what model # did you purchase ? You need at least 10 to 1 compression and a cam for it to bark IMO. Glass packs , Walker continentals, cherry bombs were the ticket years ago, just put a dynamax system on my OT Camaro, sounds good, slightly louder than stock system.

  12. Yeah I bet you did see some improvement at everything below 4500 rpm -3" is too big for a happy driver. A big ass Mega pushing 600 cube motor or majority racing you need 3" pipes.

Corking it up some helps but that's a backasward Kind of way to get there, in the tailpipe. For the next one - 2-1/4 head pipes into a 3" muffler to a 2-1/2" tail pipe. Make a long cone for the transition.

If you like it then what's the difference

Exactly, and I have the ones that cause the rap. I'm not looking for why this happening. I'm just thinking it's so different than what a car like mine sounds like that I'd just leave it alone. It sounds really cool along side it while at a cruse.

  14. I just installed some really short glass packs on my fiat 18" over all with 12" of muffler,...running out of the stock manifolds which are setup for 1 3/4" pipe..i liked the straight pipes i was running before i installed mufflers, but was too loud inside the lil, short wheelbase tin can of a car... Didn't think I'd like the short packs, but it sounds very good..glad packs have a hard twisting inn the center baffle...byt they doubt sound like glad packs..if that makes sense...i have about 6" or so total behind then with short 45 angle turn out....

Guess it's like others say....who cares if you like it...

What's that sonny, speak up will ya!
For years I blamed my hearing loss on working in a fab/machine shop for 30 years.
Then I remembered my high school 57 Chevy. IIRC, it was 1971 when I put the Appliance headers on it with the soon to be outlawed Purple Hornies, the direct bolt on header version, yep, the big ones. I'm pretty sure the outlet was directly under the front seat.
They were absolutely obnoxious and I loved it.
    Those were the days.

Until the tail pipes, mine dumped under the rear foot wells.

Move the muffler back so the tail pipes are shorter and head pipes are longer, the sound will change.

Thanks, what I'm really after is not how to cure this. It's how did Hot Rod's sound then as compared to now.

Lots of people run H pipes or X pipes on dual exhaust today, I don't believe they were common back then.

I had a independent shop install the pipes and steel pac mufflers (Porters), noticed they staggered the mufflers length wise on the pipes. Does that balance out the exhaust, or maybe help prevent drone?

    "Just like them but different"
I think the current ones are from the energy crunch years.

  26. I had a 421 Pontiac with 2" all the way and cherry bombs in the middle. It rapped loud when on the gas, but no rapping when backing off. Cops hated it! (and me)

  27. It prevents drone, so the two pipes can not set up a resonance frequency.

  29. A little rap is good.........I like glass packs all the cars have them.
The '60 Elco with a 283 has 2" pipe out the back, with 16" blown out glass packs (blue streaks). It growls and pops down hill at about 3000 rpm when it's still cold.
