History HAMBERS and Doo Wop !

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bobg1951chevy, Dec 4, 2016.

  1. A while back, I began the thread ***led "Mature HAMB Folks".
Those same HAMBERS who participated in that thread were also part of our great Doo Wop era ..... waaaay back in the '50's, cruisin' in our "traditional" rides, our AM radios cranking, tires smoking, taking in a drive in movie, with our best girl snuggled next to us.
Today, on PBS, we watched a program recorded back in 2001, with so many Doo Wop artists of the '50's, doing their '50's music on stage.
I remember all those lyrics so well, but don't ask me what I ate at todays breakfast.
Do you still remember all the music ?
Little Anthony and The Imperials, The 5 Satins, Little Richard, Jay and The Americans, Lloyd Price, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Earls, The Crests, The Drifters, The Coasters, Paul Anka, The Flamingos, The Fleetwoods, Sam Cooke, The Everly Brothers, The Duprees and so many others.
Brought tears, just thinking of those great, great days, thinking of all the fun we "future HAMBERS" had back then, thinking of my buddies who loved those days, but are no longer here to reminisce.
    GOD, I miss them.
Life is so short, death is so long ...... enjoy one another, enjoy what we have HERE today.
Most of all, cherish all those great memories !
    Those memories are yours forever.
    Bob.

    Bob - go here: http://www.wrdv.org/
It is a local volunteer radio station that also broadcasts on the 'net.
Old rock is only on the weekends from about 6:00 AM (Eastern Standard Time) Saturday to midnight on Sunday (with a break for church service on Sunday from 7:00 to noon). Live disc jockeys, no commercials and the most outstanding early rock music you will ever hear. A lot of the stuff they play you heard back then but it never made it to the top.

The rest of the week they play 'Big Band and Swing, which I've come to appreciate also

    Give it a try!

After 6:00 on Sunday the music gets a little different than what I like, Sat & Sun afternoons are best for my tastes.

I listen to "Old Time Rock" stations all the time, we grew up in changing of music standards, remember watching Elvis on Ed Sullivan show, Only showed from waist up. I think it's why Country Rock is so popular today, because it's like old Rock and Roll, the best music. Us a Baby-Boomers have lived in the best of times in so many ways, music, cars, racing, job/career opportunities, medical advancement, the list goes on and on, I'M Thankful And Greatful for these things and have high hopes for the future, my children, grand children, great grand children. We are and will continue to be the best country in the world.

I'm a huge Doo wop lover!!!....I've recorded literally over 120 c***ette tapes of groups ya' never hear on the radio over the years, or had never promoted and simply shelved. Some good, some questionable, but all worth the listen....my favorites are still: The Crests; The Fabulaires; The Belmonts; The Dubs & The Cleftones! I listen to the music most every day in the garage, and it's amazing how many GREAT groups never got the air time on the radio!!!.............I love the music, and it's never going out of my work space....turn it up, and let the music take me to another era & time! Most groups were incredibly talented....it's worth the time to listen to them, and what they had offered in harmony and acapella....fits in with my projects like it's meant to be heard!!!:D

Uggg I just wish they would quit playing that stuff at car shows. I love old stuff just now old music. Three hours of that and gangster rap is a welcome change.

  10. You're just not old enough to recall that music (firsthand) and the great times ***ociated with that music.
It was good music, maybe not for everyone though.

When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's I would tune in to Wolfman Jack on the weekends on my little radio, and those K-tel albums on the hi fi. Dion, Drifters, Coasters. I'm with you guys. Love that doo-wop.

That early rock and roll is awesome too. Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry.

I lose all interest with the Brittish invasion and Motown.

Then I'm back in with psychedelic rock and metal. Jimi, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple.

The music they listen to today just shakes the ground and the trunk lids. Sounds like an earthquake, how can you dance to that?

American Bandstand is really getting way back there. Every red blooded teenage boy watching that show lusted after Justine. How many of you old timers remember that?

DOO WOP ....... I agree ... WONDERFUL MEMORIES of a time that shall never return...sigh .... I sang Do Wop on the streets of Philadelphia in the 50's ...... Recorded for Decca back in the day.. did FORTY YEARS as a PRO Musician ( still gig a little ) ..... Worked with some of the NAMES back in the day .... MY own band did Do Wop shows for 30 years and the crowd LOVED IT !! It went over even BETTER than the stuff that we played that was current to the time .... yea...did it ALL.... rock, blues disco, etc, etc ..... but even all the guys in the band LOVED doin' the Do Wop show... it was a HOOT !!!
If 'ya want a FIX and you're in Jersey get to LEAD EAST !!! GOOD Do Wop on the stages, in the halls, and All thru the parking lot !!!
Don't think it's DEAD for a second ...... I still do gigs that are Do Wop oriented and they are FULL to capacity most times ..... I am SO GRATEFUL to have actually LIVED, LOVED and PLAYED for a LIVING in those days ..... and we are all still OUT THERE partying !!!!
Hell ... I can still sing " Are the stars out tonight " to my wife and she'll drop her ******* in a HEART BEAT !!!! ;)

  18. I'm a big doo-wop fan myself. Listen to it almost all of the time.
A few years back we had a great radio station Cruisin' AM 950 with a great deejay known as the Da Boogieman. He played some great doo-wop all the time. Well, things change and so do radio stations and Boogie was gone and soon 950 was too. It changed foremats and owners a few times and eventually went off the air.
A few years ago they came back on 950 again. Lots of doo-wop in the beginning, but it trailed off in favor of a lot of 60s and early 70s music. Not bad to listen to, but not as good as doo-wop.
About a year ago more changes came along, and the station was moved to AM 1430. Not many changes, still ok.
The best thing about the station is their Sunday line-up. **** Clark's Rock, Roll and Remember is on from 12-4 which is pretty good, then Sunday at the Memories with Ray Durkee is on from 4-7. It's pretty good, with some of the music going back to the 40s and sometimes earlier. Lots of old radio shows like "The Shadow" sprinkled in. I think most of the folks that were around in the 40s and 50s will like this show. But for me, the best part of Sunday is the Doo Wop shop from 7-Midnight. Lots of great doo-wop, even a lot of rare songs. The great thing about this station is that the commercial breaks aren't very long. Some stations nowadays the commercial breaks are 5 to 7 minutes long! Getting ridiculous.
Anyway, if you guys get a chance, take a listen. They stream live on the internet. Go to their site and click the red "listen live" tab in the upper right hand corner..........E

  21. Great story and info.
I"ll try singing "Are the stars out tonight" here at home, will advise if anything drops here! ;)

I can remember my parents friends teaching me how to jitterbug in the early 60's when I was 7-8 yrs old.
Still love listening to that great music.
Then in the late 60's I crossed into the dark side of hard rock. [emoji15]
