Beautiful work Tim! Glad we can all get together and help Thomas out. Now, If we could just find another '56 wagon frame and front end for the crunchy one...

Does the other car ('56 Ford wagon) need a frame? I thought the collision damage had been repaired and the main problem was a need for a complete rewirig:eek:

I think Thomas said it was wiring issues with the 55 Ford.

  5. I'm now confused. The engine being built is going into which vehicle ?
Does the recipient vehicle need body / frame work, as well, BESIDES THE ENGINE, before Thomas can get back on the road ?

Ya Dave, a VERY generous gent stepped up, covered the collison work and the repaint on 'Beula'. Thomas hired one guy to rewire it, but he was an asshat that totally botched the job - none of the circuits he touched work, looms look about what a teenager would do. He's so fustrated over that, he won't even mention the guy's name! He has another guy in mind that does very sano work, but he doesn't have a shop to work out of - does mobile work only.

THANK YOU GENTS... the G-F-M page is up over $1400!!!

Bob, the new mill is for the '56 Merc ambulance. It was oringinaly bought by Phillips 66 for use around one of their refineres, always garaged... STILL has the factory paint, but a lil' thin in a couple spots!

I would imagine it'll be open until that Y block is in that Ford running. It's still in rebuild stages.

  10. Updates! I have stopped taking in work (other than emergencies) till after Christmas to get this engine ready to deliver when I go down to my sister's next week.

Cutting the 292 piston skirts to clear the 312 crank. 292 and 312 pistons have the same pin height but different ring sets and skirt lengths so they need to be cut when used together.
    20161216_094222.jpeg

Grinding the mains on the 312 crank to fit the 292 block. 292 blocks are tougher than the 312 as they are the same casting but the 312 has been line bored bigger to fit the larger bearings thus making the area between the bolt and the bearing weaker, prone to crack.

    20161216_104411.jpeg

    Balancing comes next.

  11. OK, now clear and thanks.

Socal freeways have to be the worst in the world. I can only take so much of them...when I retire I told my kid I'm moving somewhere with only one stop sign...only if!

With that said You guys are doing some great things here!
I have donated to Go fund me and hope Thomas gets back on the road soon...GOOD LUCK GUYS!

THANK YOU 'lbcd' for your donation, and have to AGREE!!! The freeways are well designed, but we have WAY too many people with NO clue or concept - how to MERGE into traffic, look around themselves, OR use mirrors. Then, they move into the FAST LANE to roll at 63... NOTHING helps me appreciate SD freeways more than driving through Orange and LA Counties - not that they drive worse up north, just MORE shitty drivers... THEY really suck the fun out of traveling SoCal some days!

TIM, I could just give you a BIG ol' bear-hug for ALL your efforts... WOW... THANK YOU!!!

Not only is this tread cool because of the helping hands, but those of us who were born just after the y-block era are learning TONS from the pics! Thanks Tim!

P.S. sorry 'bout the confusion - seems I was the confused one. Lesson to all newbies; read twice, post once!

    HaHa, I'm still learning that!:D

McTim.... Definitely more work than originally agreed upon, but wow! Thanks.
Gotta say to all of those that are following and to those that are donating, this is great stuff. Looking forward to being there for a good old fashioned install party when the time comes.

  16. Maybe if there's something leftover from the Merc fund it can be used for a harness in the Ford. My offer to do some wiring still stands if there's a place to work on it.

These efforts remind me of the days of "Hambandy'''(if any of you remember)

  18. More work done today.
Balancing con rods, always do the big end first. Weigh all, find the lightest and make them weigh the same by grinding or cutting.
    15590410_1201540103245437_1868351209061814222_n.jpg
    15589750_1201540173245430_6135667318874327894_n.jpg
Once the big ends all weight the same, check all the rods for total weight and adjust to the lightest by taking the weight off the small end only. By doing this you make the "rotating weight" and "reciprocating weight" the same on each rod.
    15241371_1201540789912035_2019307005168118964_n.jpg
    15541112_1201540859912028_6645379949572311003_n.jpg
Once all the rods are done weigh the pistons and adjust the weight on each to equal the lightest.
    15492425_1201541869911927_8623349940006223015_n.jpg
After we get the rods and pistons to equal weight we add the rotating pieces (big end and rod bearing) together, add the reciprocating pieces together (small end, piston, pin, locks and rings) Then add 50% of the reciprocating to 100% of the rotating and use this number (in this case 2024 grams for two rod/pistons for each throw) to make our "Bob weights". Then we attach them to the crankshaft as shown.

    15542219_1201542679911846_4606034322579135733_n.jpg
Finally we spin the crank, remove weight (in some cases add) where indicated till the machine indicates as close to zero front and rear as possible.

Thomas is gonna have to be careful on entering "on" ramps and nailing it to blend in, as that engine is gonna be so much stronger than his original that he'll be accelerating faster than expected!
Been a long time since I've seen the inside of a Y block, first was a friend's '56 Merc tudor middle level trim.Had a 312 w/teapot carb and a BW T85 trans 3 on the tree, and it surprised many a Chevy after it got wound up!

I'm loving this thread as this is almost a carbon copy of the Y Block Tim built me for my RPU.
I have a little more cam in mine.
Seeing the pictures and knowing all the steps Tim went through in the build is priceless.
This is great, Thomas will have a strong motor.

Very nice work. My machinist delivered my new 468 (454+.060) BBC short block yesterday, for my OT Bracket Car. He's a one man shop, and has other machine shops bring him work such as balancing and crankshaft grinding. This kind of gives guys an idea just what goes on in the dying breed of machine shops, and automotive machinist's. I think The Highwayman is going to be impressed, especially with this all happening this time of the year. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
