We had this car on the salt for only a few days. Breedlove had set the LSR record at 555 mph on November 2, 1965. This was pretty late in the season and the rains were expected at any time. Once it starts to rain on the salt flats, it floods the entire area and it doesn't dry up until the following spring. This is what we were hoping for since we had been going back and forth with Art Arfons and the Green Monster all summer. Our hope was that it would start raining and keep Arthur from coming back and breaking our record.

Goodyear had rented the track (so to speak), keeping Firestone from renting it for Arfons. But renting the track was not enough, you actually needed to be running on it in a record attempt. They would give you a day or two but if you were not going to do something on it, anyone else could rent it. Breedlove came up with the idea of having his wife, Lee try to break the woman's land speed record in the jet car. This was a last minute idea, actually. Lee was in Wendover doing laundry at the local laundromat. He drove over and picked her up and brought her to the salt.

Lee had never driven a car faster than about 75 mph before. He stuck her in the car, told her to push the pedal on the right, and steer straight (we had set the throttle stop so the car would only go about 300 mph). She made the pass, we turned the car around, and she made the return run, and averaged 308 mph, a new LSR for women.

    And still, no rain.

Goodyear called Shelby (the regional Goodyear race tire distributor) and asked Carroll if we could borrow a car to try and set some other records. We were just stalling for time. They sent up this Cobra and the next day we the state laid down the 5-mile circle and the day after that, Breedlove and Tatroe took turns at the wheel.

And still no rain. There was nothing more we could do.

Arfons came back a few days later and broke Breedlove's 555 record with a 575 mph average. Now he had the advantage but on his return run, he blew the right rear tires and wiped out the rear of his car. He would have to return to Ohio for repairs. Goodyear quickly secured the track for us and Breedove made two runs, one in each direction, averaging 600.608 for the new record. This was on November 15th. And that record lasted many years.

A sad ending for an awesome car. This is how it looked when it came out of storage.

Would have made a great, stand-alone thread, too, IMHO. Gary

  11. Agreed. There was some weird sh!t went on even when he was part of the Detroit scene. At certain get-togethers with people who have been in the biz for a long time - his name comes up - they change the subject.

Lots of weird mofos in the music biz.
