Yeah, those '39 headlights are cool now that there are better reflectors and bulbs available. But the originals, after a few years of tarnish on the reflectors and pitting of the lenses, combined with 6V and poor connections from aging, they got so dim you had to "strike a match to see if they were burning", as the expression goes.
All the awful looking kits to put sealed beams in them that came out later were good sellers for a reason

Actually Brett that's an old picture from last year when my son was painting the engine bay in that 55. The weather here hasn't been too bad yet, in fact I was cruising on Christmas Eve. I was just trying to make Mark feel better!

I have a 1939 Ford from my Dad - 327 Chevy and Muncie 4 speed with z bar clutch - 1940 petals and stock steering. The exhausted head pipes are routed very poorly and hang down. Need to revise my linkage for the clutch. Looks like perhaps 3 options, 1- 1939 petal assemble and connect to the clutch fork with ne z bar. 2- perhaps adapt a cable to replace z-bar. 3- hydro. through out bearing - or slave cylinder. How is your 40 and 3 speed - clutch configured?

 

Hi Mike,My memory is a little foggy on this combination but back in 1980 I used the 40 Ford pedal assembly . I modified it by pinning the clutch pedal to the cross shaft which transferred the lever action to the inside of the x member at welded an ear on the shaft to attach the clutch linkage too. This allowed me to use the stock clutch fork that came with the three speed and bell housing. Sorry I don't have any pictures. It was done long before digital cameras.....

 

Thanks for the response - I did not think of using the cross shaft - it is missing from this 1939 Ford - I will look in the spare parts boxes for one. The car is a 1939 Deluxe Coupe - sitting on a 1940 frame bought by my Dad in 1959. I did a 1939 Ford Std - Sedan Delivery - 351-C Cobra-Jet engine - toploader 4 speed and I used the 1939 petals - with a fabricated linkage to pull the Ford clutch fork on the toploader trans from the floor petals. But the 39 petals have an inboard fork beside the transmission and the 40 petals ford is near the outside frame rails. I did not have an extra 1939 set of petals - and a few sets of 1940's.

I went Chevy to early Ford and early Ford to Chevy transmission adapters. Worked pretty slick, and allows for the use of all the '40 Ford pedal linkage. Probably spent more money than necessary, but it did the trick, and I am using the stock 3 on the tree shifter. We bent up some 5/16" rod for the shift rods between the column and the shift arms on the transmission.

So does anyone else think this is what you get when you graft a 37 chevy rear end to a 40 Ford?

I want to open this one up for discussion as the whole rear section doesn't look to be '40 Ford although the front sheetmetal appears to be, well except for those '39 wipers above the windshield. Better eyes than mine please help figure this car out. The body line below the back window appears to be '37 Ford Coupe maybe....I'm baffled, please help.

 

Found the pictures on FB by a Bruce Eisel from Ocean City MD. he wrote "Moved to New Orleans, Purchased from the widow, brought back to MD in the 80's..Sold again.. Don't know where...." He is looking for more info and may have more pictures to post later. If I see any additional pics or info I'll forward it to you.

 

Fascinating story and car. I posted the pictures in the Md. Social Group seeking info (Hope you don't mind). Maybe someone there will remember it. Lots of folks on there from the Glen Burnie/ Pasadena, Md. area.

I don't mind at all. They are looking for more info and I thought no better place than on the HAMB.... Rik Hoving posted the following pictures of the car in California. Looks like they made some changes to the original build.

 

I'm using a t5 in my 40, I tried 39 pedals, but found I couldnt get the travel I needed on the clutch fork. I'm now ussing two 40 brake pedals, both heated and bent, and a MC/slave combo based on NOVAK's design (https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/clutch/kit-hcr3/). They were very helpfull with info for me. There's updates on my build page with pics. I've not finished it yet, but I cant see why it shouldnt work.

 

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing the 37/40 "3 Window" for sale at Hershey. Must have been the early 1980s and it looked like the pictures above with the spare tire cover. I didn't realize it was the same car I saw at the Road Agents show in 2004. It had California plates, but was in Connecticut. Good eye StrayKat!
