Projects hemi water crossovers- whatcha got because this sucks.

This came up in another thread and it deserves its own.

it's easy, it's available but it's oh so God awful ugly.



That hose crap unit is supposed to replace this out of production unit from PAW.

Now that's what I'm talking about !!! And there's no comparison.


So did you do something cool? Make something? Looking for ideas?

Have a PAW unit? Want to sell it? Want to get it copied?

 

Some years back a friend (RIP Terry) built a killer 354 Hemi for his gorgeous 57 BelAir.
He was doing fine with my input on component selection(I thought) then another guy at work let him see a magazine article about hemis and let me just say it looked like his car was parked inside an exploding Hot Heads warehouse, yuck.
Valve covers, Edelbrock carbs, air cleaners, crossover, etc.
But the most hideous was the top mount alternator, omg.
And who thinks chromed Hemi valve covers can be improved on.

Hey, an alternator might be a good way to cover or distraction from that BS water crossover

 

There's one for sale on the ebay. I think about 150.
If u call HH and tell then you want it all silver they might do that for u. They did it for my intake remote thermostat kit. So whats wrong with a stock one?

 

Here's one I set up on a Red Ram.

 

There was just two different aluminum crossovers on ebay last week. The cast one on the right has one day of bidding left! The polished one that looked like an original was mighty tempting.

 

HotHeads have a cast crossover, a buddy of mine used it on a 354, looked OK and seemed to be good quality. The HH website is a bit weird to navigate, so it's not easy to find - that god awful hose... thingy is the only thing that shows up at first.

Factory unit is tried and true. And no bling.

I've been thinking about these too, and trying to decide if I should use a the stock crossover, or the intake ports as similar to the pics above.
The PAW one on EBAY is bid up to $308! and still going....The HH is similar just a front facing thermostat.

 

fabricating a part similar to these , in a configuration that fits the engine and clears the obstructions would not be difficult.

 

With your skills you could design your own and make a bunch of them. I'm sure they would sell.

I don't know, I get hung up on weird shit like this. To me it's unacceptable but it seems that the hose thingy is just fine and perfectly acceptable to the majority

 

The only difference between the hemi and my 427 chevy, is that the chevy has 1/2" pipe threads on the old Weiand blower intake, that you can run hose barbs in, and heater hose to connect to the Offy remote thermostat housing. You can replicate this by making a couple chunks of aluminum plate, maybe 1/2" thick, cut to shape, with two bolt holes, and a 1/2" pipe thread hole in the center. Bolt the plates to the fronts of the heads.

Then it would get done.

 

My stock Chrysler crossover with a HotHeads intake. Once I decide how to mount an alternator, I'll probably trim off its unused ears.

 

Hot Heads unit, cut apart, and milled a new top to match the valve covers.

 

This is what I built for my 270" Hemi as I didn't like what was available. It's not finished yet as I had a couple of pin holes at first and wanted to make sure I'd cured them. I ended up using JB Weld around the seams to correct that. I still don't see the one Scotty posted on Hot heads site.

When I built this, I didn't want to use connecting hoses. Using stainless bends and threaded tube, after installing the threaded tubes into the thermostat housing, I completed the mountings at the heads and welded it up. The problem I had, was getting it tight, sealed and have the clocking and centers work out. I finally sawed it apart, and went with the hoses, it was the best I could do.

 

Yes I know AirCraft fittings and hoses have been around a long time but,JMO the "hose thingy's" only look good if you have other "hose type thingy's" to complement each other (chrome, polish, bling, etc.) after a while it gets kinda Street Roddy looking. If it's the one and only "thingy" it sticks out like a donkey dick........................................

 

IME the JB Weld won't hold up long and it will start weaping coolant.

 

31Vicky, yes those are available for the Chrysler but not the DeSoto or Dodge Hemi. Also when I made mine I wanted a straight clean line not the hose sticking way up in the air like it would've if I had the thermostat mount horizontal instead of vertical like I made it.

 

How about no crossover, and run two hoses to the top tank of your radiator? Ala' flathead Ford.

 

That's also an option.
I had my radiator built that way too.
The problem arises with the thermostats and a housing. I hunted down the smallest body with biggest holes units as well.

 

Flathead Fords (pre 1949) have the thermostat setting on top of the neck of the head, and I inserted a short length of pipe above it in the hose to hold it in place. No housing needed. Your difficulty may be finding a small diameter thermostat.

 

Two hoses is the way mine was setup when I got it, see picture, trouble was no thermostats. When I had to have a new radiator built I wanted a thermostat so I had the new one built for one hose. Then built my piece for the thermostat

 

Would the hose and AN fitting work if they were all just black.
