The wheels are FETON, they gave them to the better running cars in the 60's. We had them on a car I campaigned with in 1969, Tom Schumacher's '67 Ford Fairlane.

I realize it says SS/X on the window but the prior years (pre-1972) it was a Junior Stocker.

AH the old days of the then new M&H stiff as a bitch dreaded 7" bulging sidewall slicks. And they better not be wider than 7 31/32 LOL. then you had to shave the edge down with a "cheese grater". BUT they were still better than the old recaps.

No, it was always a 409. NHRA just factored it down to D/S later in the '60s. I posted a lot of history on his Wildfire cars. Try a search. The one in that photo was is second car which he built from the Fugitive. He continues to campaign a 3rd car until he died and it ran a best of 9.68. I was on his crew and that car looked as good as it ran. He cleaned the underside of the car with Pledge.

I was at the Springnationals the year this car was runner up.It was a huge crowd favorite because it got big head start over every car it raced. It was also a local car too.The motor was a 283 2bl leaker motor.Had a loose plug in the intake to give it more air.Sounded like it was on its last pass every run.LOL

  17. Here is a pic that will keep us out of trouble.
That leaker deal was strange and interesting case study..Leave it to Jr.Stock racers to come up with that idea.
I had a 61 2 dr HT that made SS/X with the PG weight.A little harder to leak that...And NO, we didn't call 61's "bubbletops" back then!

Well probably only Paul would know this, but maybe somebody else can recall:
I know Dave Kempton took C/SA at the 68 Winternationals - wondering what best et/mph he was turning at that meet (of course if it was a BYE run that wouldn't tell much....)

I've also read that Platt missed the call for C/SA so didn't actually race against Kempton so was there ever a real match up of the 428CJ vs the 383/343 ?

I'm pretty sure it was Bobby Warren in his SS/L 1969 Camaro.

  22. Bobby is correct, but I'm thinking it was with a 67 SS/IA car

Nope, it was the 1969 Camaro stick car. The SS/IA '67 Camaro to the best of my recollection ran in the 1974 season. In 1973 Bobby ran a SS/K 1965(?) Chevy II.

  29. I honestly don't remember that car. What color was it? He must have beat up the record in the final, because at the Summers, he was driving the red Chevelle 300 .I remember cuz I raced him in I think, the third round.
