Picked my 62 up Earlier this month. It's far from "right", but for $500…

This thread is awesome. So much inspiration.

  4. Nice blog post, Bigcheese.
    I dig the power plant.

Nicely done Bigcheese. Those RB engines make for good cheap swap fodder and its nice to stay with the inline six. I looked into those and 90s BMW sixes for swapping into my old Ford.

I've been working on my '62 for about a decade now. When I got it it had been (badly) converted to a later 200 six and a C4 auto. The wiring was gone, as were the instruments, etc etc. I finished the auto conversion, did a painless-style wiring harness and drove it like that for a couple years.

Then I built a 200 and added a SROD transmission I found in an old Fox body Capri. The 200 is built for 9:1 compression, zero deck height, with the big log head, Carter YFA, and Duraspark II. I also have a cheap tri-y header and a 2.5" exhaust.

The SROD is a 3+od transmission. Took a lot of cutting out the floor and braces to get it installed because that shifter is right where the lateral crossbar of the frame that supports for floor pan goes. And I'm not super impressed with the SROD. The gears ratios are not optimal, especially with the underpowered, low revving six. It's fine on the highway in overdrive. If I had it to do over I'd have shelled out the dough for a T5.

The last part of the drivetrain is an 8" unit from a Maverick. The center chunk is from a '65 Falcon and has 3.50 gears. The Maverick 8" will just fit under the Falcon. I have maybe 1/4" clearance between tires and fender lips. The wider drum brakes with finned drums are from a Granada with that weird, otherwise useless WER code rear end. They fit the 8" perfectly.

Granada front brakes, and 65 V8 steering, as well

Working on finishing the suspension now. I rebuilt the front end with 65 Falcon steering, roller bearing perches, roller idler arm, and homebrew solid mount adjustable strut rods. I also did the "Shelby" mod to drop the lower control arm. I added a 3/4" sway bar to the rear end. Need new rear leaves, caltracs, and a bigger front sway bar. Once I finish all that it'll be onto the interior and body work.

Later on I may V8 swap the car. I imagine it'd go like stink with a dirty 351 Windsor. I have the frame stands, and a set of V8 coil springs should I decide to. I figure I should build the rest of the car first to where it can handle V8 power. Right now I'm happy putting along a few MPH under the speed limit and getting mileage in the high 20's.

One other thing about my '62 above is I have these Procar seats in it and I am not a fan of them. They sit at a nice height and are comfortable for cruising, but they have no side support at all. Taking corners I feel like I might fall out of the seat.

I saw a post earlier where someone had used the other style of Procar lowbacks (the ones with a more wraparound back). How did those work out?

I've got a set in my 63 Futura sedan and they've worked out very well for me.

A buddy of mine had installed the same seats as above in his 63 Hardtop and I tried them- I thought they were too firm and slippery....

And this is for you, Gimpy.....

Very scarce. Got this one for $120 on eGay about 4 years back.

Yeah, those are the other style of seats I'm thinking of. So those hold you in alright in the corners? I have a set of original '65 Mustang buckets as well, I guess my other option would be to invest in the TMI style seat covers and padding with actual bolsters in them.

  14. Yes.
Very comfy and no slip and slide like the others.

    Awesome Falcons!
Not to be a downer, but I saw on the news that 63-64-ish Falcon convertible burned up in the Blue Cut fire here in SoCal :-(

I saw that too. Plenty of good replacement Falcons to be had.

Lives, and lifetimes, not so much.[emoji25]

  17. Decided to dive in on my 62 crewcab falcon and glad I did, guy before me said he had it all ready to go, I decided to cut half a coil up front and do a visual on the rest... dangerous is the understatement, what wasn't stripped, bent, or broke was missing hardware. So I rebuilt the upper control arms, new ball joints, cut half a coil, drilled the Shelby relocation holes, got new lower control arms, new wheel bearings, and everything for the brakes minus backing plates. Good times!

This is my new 1960 Falcon two door wagon acquired four weeks ago. I have lowered it three inches, installed 1960 Buick taillights and added stainless steel window shades.

The wagon is a garage mate to my 1963 Ranchero.

Thanks scrap metal 48. The Ranchero also has 1960 Buick tail lights.

I have 62 Mercury Comet. What is the largest tire and rim can be installed on the car without a mini-tub? I plan on installing a shortened 9" Ford Rear End on the car.

I have a 62 Mercury Comet that I'm turning into a street rod. Can you tell me what is the largest tire and rims that will fit on the car without having to mini-tub? I plan on installing a modified Ford 9" Rear End.

    Thanks!

Nice work on the Car. Resullts look good.

I see you did the disc brake conversion, I have just finished the swap on a 64 Comet. Can you tell me the steering parts you used. Right now I have the Versaises outer tie rod ends, and the crap that came with the car. The steering box is a 1" sector shaft. And the pitman arm (which is loose) hits the clutch linkage. Did you modify the steering stops on the strot rods? Thanks for the help.

IMG_6607.JPG Adding a couple of mine to keep the post going. 64 Sprint convert and a newly acquired 64 Futura.

  25. Well, here's my Australian 'sprint'! Couldn't afford to bring one out of the states to Tasmania, so we made our own version, cut up a 1965 Aussie XP coupe, added a Xk tear end with an Aussie Xl front. Running a 351 Windsor, C4 & shortened 9".[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
