You could always get a Focus PZEV engine, there are kits to convert to RWD, I 've seen Beretta GTZ for dirt cheap on Leboncoin also even though they are extremely rare here, then there are Toyota engines like the 22R. Many options for good 4 bangers over here.
In Paris no more car older than 20 year old during the day weekdays, which is highly wrong since it's based on a year and not what's coming out of the tailpipe...

    Do you have tailpipe testing?

Here in California, the state computer plugs into your car's computer, they run the car on a dynamometer, and test data goes right to the network.

This has been going on since about 1995, with OBD2 systems. Before that there were simpler tests for smog.

Of course older cars (30 years or more) are exempt from this testing, but you can still be cited for making smoke.

Toyota would be a solid choice, but something with more Euro heritage would be neater in this car.

Well, it's the metric system and Europe... We (maybe not France and Germany?) still use BHP when we talk about engines, but formally everything is in kilowatts. My hot rod can have 20 kW per 100 kg car to pass state inspection, which translates to 27 BHP per 220 lbs of car. Which gives me around 300 BHP I think, which is fair enough.

Also, we still use inches for TVs and rims. Sometimes construction materials too, because 2-by-4 is easier to say than 50-by-100 millimetres...

It seems to me like central and southern Europe don't have specific laws regarding older and modified cars, I guess it's unheard of? Northern Europe and UK are more connected to the US and we have a culture of doing things ourselves, like building our own houses and cars.

So, newer cars are subject to all kinds of stupid government regulations up here, but we also have the 30 years rule. Which means that anything goes as long as you have lights, brakes etc, no rust and a sensible engine regarding the car's size and weight.

I don't mean to stray from the original topic, but I'm a bit giddy today, since we today got news that we finally can build a car from nothing, and not pay any taxes on it! Until now we had to modify an existing car to avoid taxes, but hey! Cheers!

Before I put the 2.6L Saviem in my Fregate I considered an Alfa 2L or a "small" 2.3 Jag 6 but they ain't cheap to fix nor would they be practical for daily use like Rat wants, and gas is at roughly 5.5$ a gall.
For daily use there are mostly unfriendly engines, Sierra Costworth and BMW M3 would make great engines too. If it was me I would go with a Toyota SR22 or Honda F20/F22, but I love old engines so if it was me, I would never do it...

Ive got a siera break twin cam and 5 speed sitting here, got all the electrics aswell and differential and axles and hubs,
Was gonna use it in a "lotus 7" but changed my idea.
If your deal dont work out let me know,
Hope it works out for you.

  10. Got rid of this a couple of years ago. 1972 with the German built 2000 with new cam, followers and valve work. Unfortunately all the head work got the compression up to the point where a rod would knock over 45 mph.

    Here we are guys;).
Today I bought all the parts for the Frégate......

The engine is a Pinto 2.0L (in Horse Power conversion, actually, this engine develops 109HP, with original 2 bbl Weber carb (carburetor is better for me, because injection need to be manage with a computer, and I prefer the "classic style look" when I'm open the hood).
    5 speed manual transmission.
Of course, all parts comes for the transplantation;).

I must take all parts next week.....

    :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::):):):):):):)

Actually, you'd be surprised: among European rodders, the Ford Pinto engine is well respected for being both buildable to produce power and economical to run on wildly expensive European fuel. In the US we don't take four-bangers seriously, but the rest of the world does.

    How nice, rat'!
There are very nice motors, a Weber carb on those things make a nice difference to performance, and being conservative in the setup your better fuel consumption.
Them Variable Venturi carbs is not that good, but any Weber will run circles around them regardless if you choose the 2bbl 32/34, 34/36(best fit hotter motors) they run vacuum secondaries, or if you go to the full on Race setup with 1 or 2 2bbl 40 IDF or 40 DCOE.

They last setup cost more then the others, but they run so smooth, and if you choose to bump the cam later you can adjust/re-jet them you got, and not buy new.
When you learn to set en up, they run like Fuel injection!!

But good call on that engine!

  16. Burton in England has lots of parts for the 2000. Actually got a new cam and followers for mine from them shipped to my home for about half of what people wanted for a cam in the U.S.

    @rramjet
Them guys know There stuff, but I believe they are suffering under them legal "regime" as us in Denmark, so when engine swapping up to 20% power is legal, above 20% requires an statement from original manufacturer that it's legal.

So power upgrades might not be in his future. But widening the powerband is legal, but not raising the top of the line is illegal. And they most likely have some kind of emissions test there has to be passed to be legal to drive.

Think US pre-SEMA, Don "the wavemaker" and Vic Edelbrock junior did some work, to get the stock power back and lower the Emissions, with out going to the SMOG setup and ruin a good motor.
It's the same thing with those lousy carb that came stock on the most Taurus/sierra/Granadas what's a shitty compromise at best!

Is There a build thread for your project 'jet?
Sounds interesting, I didn't know Burton made stock cams.
Is yours a 2.0 pinto? If so it could contain info valuable for our friend the rat'.

    ....That was Rock'n'Roll.....:p:p:p:p:po_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O....

So, the junkyard man ring my bell, "come on Ratataouille, the parts are ready".....yeah, I take the "petit panel", and pay the man.....he ask me, go to the demolition area, follow my employee......and, 800 meters later....I'm in the middle of the junkyard....the parts are on the floor (wet and swampy ;-) ).....and the guy say, be careful, i'm gonna put the car on the truck first. Ok....He start an old Fenwick or Clark, empale the old Ford Sierra.....but, one of hydraulic cylinder get out of the Fenwick!!!!!! Amazing....the Ford falls to the ground just beside my parts.....very, very close....but not on....pfweeee:eek::eek::eek::eek:.
Then all the staff employee help the Fenwick conductor to repaire the broken Clark hydraulic cylinder....and during that time, I get all my parts....I. just wanted to get away from here.....
    Funny day........:)

So, I have check casting numbers, and learn some informations about this engine (105HP). Carb is Weber 32/36.

Next days, the first step is "start the engine on the floor".....I want to listen how it sounds....

I think it's gonna be allright to install the Pinto in the Frégate. Dimensions seem to be good....but the radiator will not fit, it is too wide.....But the real difficulty is to move the engine on that fucking floor...alone it's not easy to roll the trolley :confused::confused::p:p:p
    That's it for today.....

At roughly double the horsepower and one more gear your Fregate oughta really fly! How are the brakes on the car?
