A few years ago, I tried everywhere to get rid of my huge collection of Hot Rod, R&C, Car Craft, Street Rodder, ETC. I called my local library and high school to try to donate them. I was told by both that they couldn't accept them because of "liability issues". WHAT, is someone going to get a paper cut and sue them! On a trip cross country I stopped into the Speedway Museum in Lincoln NE. They have an automotive library and said they would take them all. They sent prepaid UPS labels and even offered to pay for the boxes. I would try somewhere similar that has an automotive library. Good luck.

I gave most of my collection to a friend who in turn took them to nursing homes over a period of time, lots of old car guys appreciated that I'm told. Give that some thought.

I posted a thread on here way back when asking a simple question on what the value of my own "collection" might be and it was promptly deleted.
    Good luck with it.
I ended up advertising what I have for a period of time and found no takers at all.

  11. Like everyone else, I too have ac***ulated a m***ive collection. I even had some of them, hard bound for each year. We need to take some of them, around to doctor offices. As they always have old worn out, Time, People or other ****py mags etc. I feel sorry that they can't afford any car, or new mags. ha ha. Ron...

The only value that I have gotten from my 50 year collection of Hot Rod related magazines and books is in the reading of them..... WorpedDriver_Castleford.jpg

Man, I have been buying old magazines off eBay for a while trying to fill my collection of old mags. You could list them on there in sets by the year or whatever and someone will likely be interested. Heck, send me a pm....I still have lots of gaps in my collection. ;)

Rod an custom did a series on the 53-4 Chevrolet. Install SBC mustang ll front. Different rear. Emergency brake along with some other items. I'd like to have those again. I gave all my mags away five years ago thinking I'd not want them again. This I think was, late 80's early 90's

Mine are a library for a lifetime. I can't imagine ever getting rid of them. I like a lot of different things and hobbies but am a hotrodder through and through. I hate to put it on my wife or kids but they will have to decide what to do with them when I'm gone.

Please try to give them away, perhaps to a local HAMBer or someone from a local Hot Rod club that is actively looking to add back issues to their collection.

I too, have a huge collection (that I'm holding on to). Still has some holes that need filled. The internet seems to have had an effect on back issues same as modern publishing, but an internet site just isn't the same as vintage printed mags. They do take up a ton of room though.

I'm of the opinion that old car magazines are a HUGE part of our Hot Rod and Custom history and, like old car club plaques, jackets, photos, etc. are somewhat sacred and shouldn't be unceremoniously dumped in the trash. Think about how much effort and time was spent ac***ulating and organizing the collection. Some effort should be able to find a caretaker, especially if the issues are vintage.

I have a large collection also, starting about 1959. They sit in boxes in the attic of my shop. My son wants them but has no room with 3 kids and a small house.

Anybody who has early issues that would otherwise go to the garbage should send me a PM. I have a few holes in my collection I need to fill, and will make it worth your effort.

  20. I would definitely be interested. But really only interested in mags up to mid/late 60's. I'm scared of what shipping costs would be though.

If ANYONE has and 50's mags they want to get rid of (cheap). Please contact me.

I built a 12x15 room in my shop and I am trying to get them organized. They go back to middle 50s. The only mags I get now are Rodder's Journal and Vintage Truck. The others are for money builders, and I don't have much left. I have my early fords and early mags and that is just fine with me

If anyone's considering donating, I'd like to suggest doing so to a Veteran's Administration hospital. Lot's of folks in there would be delighted to have some car magazines to read.

I had several file cabinets full of magazines and bundled them up in individual years and tried to sell them at swap meets, finally just gave them away. Some collectors are looking for certain issues but otherwise not much market.

I found my first mag (May '56 R&R) in a dump. Still have it. Bought my first mag., Aug '58 R&R, & still have it, too. Then, I discovered the California magazines - began to wonder how there could be so much difference in quality of the cars ... started seriously collecting in '59 & never stopped.
My most cherished are the issues of R&C I bought from Neal East when he was editor of R&C - he took time to write a few pages to a young, starry eyed rodder with each $2 order of 4 mags. HPIM0025.JPG HPIM0024.JPG

I had a ****load of magazines a few years back, started buying in 1972 and didn't slow down until the sad days of the Turquoise 80's. sold everything but Rod & Custom and a few others on ebay. mine were all good condition, and I sold them by complete years for the most part. I had one box of old ones (50's 60's) that I got over 400 bucks for them one at a time. probably got 5 or 6 hundred for the rest.

around here there are swap meet guys who sell only magazines. might look one of them up at the next swap.

Your problem is limited exposure. There are limited numbers of people at a swap meet. I had far better luck doing the same thing, selling a year's-worth of magazines at a time on ebay, where the exposure includes every car guy trying to build a collection of old magazines. I sold every bundle I posted on ebay, and some of the auctions for the early years brought more than a hundred bucks for 12 mags.

I help my clients sell all kinds of stuff from estates, and I routinely list their items on ebay if the item is something rare or just obscure, with a limited group of potential buyers, and difficult to establish an asking price. The search function on ebay makes it easy for buyers of obscure stuff to find your auction. All it takes is two such buyers, somewhere in the world, and your ebay auction suddenly brings good bidding.

Just last week I sold just such an item from an estate: a factory driver's manual for a Porsche 356B from 1962. There were about six different people around the world bidding on it, and it sold to a guy in Houston for $255.00. If I took it to swap meets, the odds of finding a serious buyer who really wanted it would be slim. That's when ebay shines, with its world-wide reach. I used to make a living selling rare gemstones, and I was amazed at the prices I would get in auctions from buyers all around the world: Far better than I could hope for locally.
