Projects I'm new.. I'm building a T bucket.. Don't hate me

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by evoscot, Jan 25, 2017.

  1. I have always liked the SpeedWay T as well. This car looks like pure FUN!!

  2. Sounds like a nice build plan. Keep it traditional parts and a lower stance.

So a question, if you only have one leg, how do you ride the chopper? Prosthetic leg and some different controls for the missing foot side??

This is a busy board I didn't expect this many replies so quickly. Try and answer some of the questions

The pic I posted of the bucket is one I downloaded from the ad. I only have one body.

I don't like the seat insert either but it came with the car. Seems like I loose a couple inches of width down by my feet with the insert.

My chopper is currently bare metal/rust. I want to paint it but everyone I know tells me not to so it might go another year like that. I can't quite decide what color to paint it is one reason it's still not finished. I put 7500 miles on it last year like that so one more year won't hurt I don't think.

The steam tractor graveyard is in Albany MN. There is a big threshing / old tractor show there every year called pioneer days. The guy who owns the old tractors is active in pioneer days.

The Wheel Horse was a 1972 Charger 12 Hydro. The guy's ad said $750 b/o or trade for a bunch of different stuff. A lawn tractor was one of the items he was interested in and we struck a deal.

I LOVE T-Buckets! They are some of the most fun you can have in a car. Concentrate on building something that is comfortable for you, instead of fad driven and you'll wear a smile daily. mine has served as my daily driver for long stretches of time, and takes most of it's cues from car built in the early '60s. Check out my thread "The 'Bucket Of Ugly", especially in the early pages b efore the car got pressed into daily transpo land.

The Chevy is certainly more "traditional" than the Ford, and far better packaged to fit and look well in a 'Bucket's nose. For steering, I far prefer a Corviar box reversed for packaging and the fact that you don't have to run a vertical column with it. If you need any help, fell free to message me, or even call the phone number in my posts...

T's are unreal fun and pretty much 4 wheel motorcycles so you will bond with it quick!

On my chopper my left foot doesn't have to do anything other than keep me from tipping over. My right hand does throttle, my right foot is suicide style clutch, my left hand does the brakes and shifting. I'm running both brakes off the handlebar mc with a prop valve in the rear brake line. My other bikes have modified shifters or foot positions. I have about 175,000 miles on my peg leg since 2003.

Evoscot-----Welcome aboard!!! Great start on a T roadster! Like Hot Rod Primer said, a whole bunch of us got our start on a T----me included. On your avatar, put a town or at least an area that you live in. Theres a surprising number of guys in YOUR area that will even GIVE you stuff, much less valuable advice where to locally source stuff you may or WILL need. Enjoy the build!!! Bill Rinaldi

I like it. Just finishing one I bought as basket on C/list. Told the original starter to keep his
350 Chev and TH350...I already had a running 425 Olds and SP Th-400. Just did first drive
and it is "sensitive to throttle". I don't want to hijack the thread but I would love to hear from
those of you that have built your own windshield and stanchions. My body is a Spirit and Spirit
says CCR made their windshield posts, called them and it was a dead end, nice people with no
info. Heard Speedways will fit with mods, whatever that means. I want a short windshield, not over
12 inches high. If you have helpful info please contact me privately, unless you want to help others
    also. Thanks and best advice I can give to OP is do ONE thing at a time such as brake lines;
steering; f/glass work (metalwork); wiring etc, you will see progress quicker and feel good about
    the project.

My buddy Jeff's motto: Assload of motor never hurts.

Last T-bucket I built was with my son,we did use a Mustang steering box. I made a stainless steel cover an polished it,so it looks chrome. Box is mounted low {just a little lower then front bone, with arm up=gets rear of steering rod an rear end of bone fairly close together for low bumpsteer. 025.JPG

Welcome to the HAMB, lots of support here.
An area of concern about SOME of the lower cost T bodies was there was no inner reinforcement and it was up to the owner/builder to make these modifications.
Some have built complete inner tubular structures but most are reinforced with wood.
There are some Youtube videos to show what is commonly done.
How about some shots of the inside of the body.

A hand laid fiberglass T bucket body is strong enough if it is laid up thick enough. Lots of them aren't.

  26. Why would we hate you? Sounds like a cool build. Some people may hate me when I say put a Chevy in it. Easier and more traditional. And don't be picky about CID. I wanted a super traditional 265-283 but I found a nice 350 that was a smokin' deal. I dressed up the motor nice and nobody knows the difference. And I get to enjoy the torque. Keep us posted.
