Hot Rods Help me out! What is next

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by firstinsteele, Jan 27, 2017.

  1. I have just hopped up a Buick 263 Straight Eight. Bored .125 over. Med grind cam. I used the original cam from the engine. It a is hydraulic lifter cam, so therefor I used the hydraulic lifters. Dema Elgin did the cam and re surfaced the lifters. It was installed and broken in per his instructions, which were pretty much what is considered normal on this forum. The lifters were disassembled, cleaned and re-assembled , following the Buick Shop Manual, by yours truly. 1 or more have not quietened down. I have removed the rocker arm assembly and the push rod cover. All appear good. None collapsed.

So, with all that said, what would you do next? Not my first rodeo, just the first modified one.

    Thanks for any ideas.

  2. I know Zero about the Buick strait 8 but do know that if you re grind a cam and change the Cam lobe Diameter as well as re face the lifters removing material from the bottom It's possible to drop a lifter to deep in it's bore to get into the oil slot in the block and fill the lifter correctly. Not saying that's what happened but I'd sure check into that. I'm assuming you have good Oil pressure and good top end oil in the Rocker shaft.

  3. Yes, good oil pressure. In the straight eight Buick, the lifters are supplied oil from the rocker shaft, through the rocker arm , down through the push rod. All seems to be good. I know I am missing SOMETHING, just do not know what.

    Thanks, Wizzard, for the comments.

It may need longer pushrods,as has been pointed out re grinding the cam and lifters makes the lifters lower and alters rockerarm geometry, perhaps to the point of interference someplace...

  5. With rocker arm unit removed check valve stem height with a long strait edge looking for even height all the way across. Improper stem height can cause issues. Also look for any contact points of Valve spring keeper under rocker or pushrod where it passes through the head.
