Do a search for "Radius rods" and you'll find all sorts of interesting setups. I just read through all these threads looking for setups that appear to be similar with my drivetrain. It basically makes sense now, it's just figuring out what I'm going to use for the stock to create them. That being said I've been seeing varying opinions regarding mounts. Some guys swear by Heim Joints ( loud and harsh ride) ehh. Not sure I want to go that route. Some guys use tie rod ends. Not sure that sounds safe, but I've seen plenty on here and in pics. Then there is the Clevis joint that some guys run. I'm leaning more to that style mount for the front mount however I don't see there being much rotational ability with that style mount. I have 2 sets of ladder bars I picked up along the way. I have a box of heim joints that came with them also. I'm sure they can be used for something but I would really like to keep a traditional look to the car and not ruin it with a hokey set up. Thank you guys for the replys. I'm going to pull out everything I have from the depths of the garage and see if I have what I need to make things work. Looking at all the different setups I feel like I do. If I need to grab some DOM tubing or box tubing I will. I have plenty of 1/4" and 3/8" plate for mounts and gussets when I get to that point. Gonna warm up my pencil and sketch book for a minute. I got this ! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
This is more what I was getting at, yeah. I don't think the second torque arm is necessary, but I like the symmetry.
I think this is a pretty simple straight forward setup. I like the fact it uses all Ford parts too. I'm going to see how the two sets I have work in relation to this set up with my frame and trans crossmember. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Spent the last few weeks on and off when I had time working on mounts and brackets for my rear suspension. I took my time ordering the tie rod ends, bungs and tapered mounts I would need. I mocked up a mount with cardboard for the rear torque arm that will run parallel with the driveshaft. Then made some changes because I knew I would have clearance issues with the subrails and floor So I ultimately ended up with this it's made from 1/4" plate I bent the tapered portion with my press to mimic the shape of the rear center section. Had to drill out access for the bolts to mount it and drilled the tabs for the 3/4" heim joint So that's that ... still need to clean it up with the sander but it fits perfect and works like I had envisioned. Also started mocking up front radius rod mounts on the F-1 crossmember. Hopefully the remaining pieces I need will be here today or tomorrow so I can finish welding things together. It's only time and money Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks Pat. I looked all over the H.A.M.B. and really couldn't find any type of mount that bolted on to the center housing other than cutting the Ford radius rod mount and using those. Mine aren't long enough to mount on the rear and the front crossmember so I needed to come up with something .... Kinda evolved into that. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Found this at a local auto parts store owners house ...he said he wants it gone. Complete with trans and pedals with linkage. They cut the frame behind the trans crossmember and left it as a spare motor for their yard truck. That's where it sits until I go back later today to load it up. Not planning on using it on my car but it's a nice find nonetheless. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
He called me today and asked when I was taking it. His wife is thrilled. [emoji1360] Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I asked him today if he had any old parts in the store he wanted to get rid of. He said he purchased the business in the 80's and he has parts dating back to the 50's. He said there are Tons of parts for all vehicles in boxes filling the shelves he will make me a deal on. He said I have to take it all though. Not sure he noticed me frothing at the mouth or not but I told him I will be there whenever he has time to start boxing things up. I'm glad I asked !!! I went there after work to have him help me with getting the right tierod ends for my radius rods. I ordered some and the threads were the wrong size. i missed out on a part store deal like that but i asked if the guy took everything. the seller told me everything except the junk in the attic. i "cleaned" it out for him. it was all the sales ads, flyers, posters, signage, sales gimmicks etc..... it turned out to be worth more than the parts. ask him about the "stuff" in the attic.
[emoji848] something to talk to him about for sure. I honestly can't even imagine what is down there. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I really don't have high expectations for the motor and trans because it's been outside under that rubber liner. My thought is to take it and save it from sitting outside. It's free. I'm sure there are going to be parts on it either myself or someone could use. Who knows, maybe it will surprise me. At the least I'm actually doing him a favor by removing it and building a relationship with him for the future. I'm happy to be finally working on my car...it sat idle far too long. I spent a fair amount on my motor I'm running in my car, I hope I can get some life from it before I need to do any work to it. These things cost a ton to rebuild for sure. Don't give up on that old flathead to quick, I have to tell a story. Years ago I bought a 48 chevy truck from my son in law that had a broken frame. It had an old 327 chevy in it and I sold the truck for parts but kept that old 327. It sat out side for maybe four or five years beside the barn. It rained, snowed and was subject to the weather for all of those years. Someone even stole one of the heads, yea I know one head and left the other one--what is up with that? Finally I decided to see what I could do, if anything, with that old motor. Took it to the machine shop and had it bored, it cleaned up at .040 and built that old motor. I put it into my old 30 Model A coupe and drove it with that motor for at least 15 years. Don't give up on it to quick, you just never can tell...
I'm happy to get it to the house and put it in my storage container next to the 21 stud that came with my car. I have a bottle of Mystery Oil that will go into the cylinders if I can get the plugs out. It would be nice if we're salvageable but I'm prepared if it isn't. Who steals one head. Haha. I guess that's all they needed. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
yep.. I pulled a 39 trans out of a truck frame that sat on the ground in the woods for god knows how long.... pulled the top and it was completely full of water... after getting it home and cleaning it up a little the only thing wrong with the trans was one gear that was above the water on the input shaft had some rust. the rest that was fully submerged were perfect!
Mike, I set my Tudor up the same way and when all was done there was only about 2" of distance and the axle would hammer the frame. I had to swap to a flattened 35-40 crossmember to get the 4" when everything was installed. Another idea is to do a notch or maybe a curved frame over the axle like a 32 Cliff
Thanks Cliff for the insight. I definitely have my concerns. I actually dropped the rear out last night and I'm going to install the stock A rear spring to gain some height during mockup. I am going to have to address it once it's actually on the ground and the springs are under load. I have the 40 rear spring with the rear end when I purchased it. I don't have a rear crossmember for it but I'm sure if need be, I can find one or build one if I have to. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Here's the start of the front mount on the F1 crossmember. I need to add the mount for the torque rod and I think I may add some legs on the front of the crossmember to mimic a K-Member. Just for the added piece of mind. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Maybe a piece of flat stock, in edge, in between the mounts, and then a small 45* (+/-) angled gusset from the outside of the mounts back to the X-member?? Lookin' good, Kiddo!
They're there. You just can't see them in the picture. this is them just sitting there Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks mike [emoji51] mounting surfaces for the tie rods are at 6.5" apart. I'm nervous there will be a lot of pushing and pulling on the crossmember. That's why I'm having thoughts of adding legs to the front of it. I'd rather over build it and be safe. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
