  1. Aw damn. I know what it feels like, my friend and I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a hard one to bear. May Shela rest in peace - a good dog and a best pal, who was loved dearly.

About Shela, & her love of bein clean, when "She" first arrived @ the "ranch", givin her a bath, in the tub, was a holy nightmare! She fought and struggled like you see in cartoons -- she'd kick out her legs in all directions to avoid being put INto the tub! Didn't like it at ALL!

But, afterwards, LOVED the towel downs! and would run joyfully around the house throwing herself down and rolling on the carpets to dry herself further -- "She" LOVED being clean!

Then, one evening when I was in the shower stall in our bedroom bathroom, Shela stuck her head in through the curtain and I asked her "do you want to come in?" She DID! and so began our weekly practice of showering together Sunday nights -- rarely, did we skip a Sunday -- only when I was extremely tired, and then she would poke her head in as if to ask "me too please Dad?"

I would lather her up and then she would stand on her rear legs for rinsing and spin around like a ballerina, waiting in the stall till I had dried myself, and then stepping out to be covered by a warm towel and partially dried before charging thru the house to throw herself upside down on a large warm towel on the family room carpet where she would happily twist and turn while I rubbed her dry w several more towels -- then, she would jump to her feet, and tear around the house at high speed, joyously reveling in her cleanliness!

    She was a JOY!

Towards the end, I had to hold and support her and carry her to the couch to nap in her freshness covered with and lying on warm towels

now she sleeps in the garden ----- but forever LIVES in our hearts and memories!

  4. Well I posted this on my build thread a while back but this thread brought it back to mind, and to be honest I've been thinking about Sophia a lot these past few days so what the heck, here's an edited recap.

...I've already mentioned I came back to cars after years of screwing around with bikes. One reason for the change was I wanted something where I could take one of my golden retrievers along with me when I went out for an afternoon jaunt. Desmo (in my avatar) is 16. Let's be serious, he's never going to see the car running. No, what I intended was for his little sister Sophia to hang out with me. She's six years younger than him. She's never been alone a day in her life and I knew I'd feel guilty leaving her at home on those beautiful summer days.

So I bought a car project. Take a couple years to get it running, then enjoy it with her. Cool plan.

PLOT TWIST! About two weeks after I bought the car, Sophia was diagnosed with cancer. Yeah... you see, Desmo is something of a rockstar being a 16 year old retriever. Average life is 10 - 12 years for them. Desmo is 16. Sophia is six years younger. Do the math. I never had. Sophia dying soon after Desmo? It never even occurred to me that could happen***. Screw the vets, what do they know? Desmo was (mis)diagnosed with cancer years ago for cripe sakes!

When I was tearing the car down I got past my denial long enough to realize I should at least try to take a picture of her in it. Just in case.

    Sophia_0311.jpg

There's Sophia wondering what in the heck I bought this rattle trap for, she wants to ride in a real car! Yeah, I know the picture sucks. All of them that I took that night do. My heart wasn't in it, and she wasn't feeling well, but if it didn't happen then, it maybe wasn't going to happen. (I had planned on taking better pics during later mock ups)

As you've likely already figured out, the reason I'm posting it now is because reality didn't match my fantasy of how this would work out. Sophia had to be put down this afternoon. I'll spare you the details, suffice it to say it was a rough night and the afternoon was no cakewalk either. The only good part is I have no doubt we made the right choices.

*** Desmo is still with us by the way. Up until yesterday I never seriously thought Sophia would die BEFORE him.
    /quote

So there's the Sophia story in a nutshell. Dogs rule... my project will have to be looked after by some other pup but it will always be in the spirit of Sophia.

Handsome little devil, but I think Gene would be a good nickname considering the tongue on that dog.

  12. This is a great thread, but sometimes I can't take it.
I love animals, have had umpteen dogs, cats, turtles ( yes turtles ) over the years, you name it.
Love ALL animals, it's just so sad ( yes I admit it ) to see them go. They love you, trust you, seemingly will do anything for you.
It's heartbreaking when they leave us. They deserve all the respect and love we can give them, that's what they give to us.

  13. I wrote this on another thread but i figured it would be appropriate for this one too: It's been said that time heals all wounds. But when you lose someone you care about it takes a long time to get over. When i lost my dog 7 years ago (sorry guys, it still hurts) I lost my best friend and my only other copilot (apart from the lord that is). My point is this, our pets are like family, always there when we need them and they need us. And when they leave us, it hurts, but in time, we recover.

Lab & some smaller breed mix -- approx 4 yo - already house trained :) and calm demeanor -- we are feeling BLESSED! The pain of losing Shela is never going to go away, but is lessened by the joy of bein able to provide Sadie w a better life -- we'll see how long it takes for her to believe she's *home* ;) :) her's to defend that is --

Shela took 2 months before she'd venture a peep -- and she *tried* to turn herself into a pug 3 times on the glass doors before I put some flag decals ON them at her eye level -- still there --

  17. Here's mine. I'll never understand why a dog would tangle with a porcupine more than once. It sure is a bad way to interrupt an otherwise great day of hunting.

About 1972 my brother won a dachshund in a drawing at a hockey game, we already had a boxer and mom said "no way are we getting another dog". But dachshund puppies are pretty cute and that, as they say, was the end of that. It was a miniature black and tan, and super nice dog, but not to strangers. Bit the Meter Man (remember those?) and probably got a snootful of pepper spray at least once now that I think about it. They like to sit in the sun for some reason. One time I heard a horn blaring out front. Went outside and she was sunning herself in the middle of the road, oblivious to an 18 wheeler running bobtail. Good dog.
