I just replaced all of my 8' T12's with LED's. The ballasts were going out and I did not want to replace them to do a T8 conversion. The conversion kit for the "tombstones" was $135 and the 4' bulbs were $8 each. To do 13 dual tube fixtures cost me $535 all up. Get the frosted lens LED's as the light diffusion is much better.

  2. I trashed all of my fluorescents and went with LEDs from Costco. I live in Southern California and don't know about cold start ups.

These make quite a difference in a cold garage. I have an 8' x 2 of that and a few 4' x 2 fixtures. Plenty of light.

I just switched to LED in my garage. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES! Of course, the old fluorescent bulbs were 18 years old and dim, but, WOW!

I am planning on upgrading my lighting I work year around with the big doors open so I get a lot of natural light in the daytime. my fluorescents aren't too bad ,but I have an LED stand up tripod light
that really puts out the light and does not put out a bunch of heat like my halogen tripod light does.
Trying to eliminate shadows when painting. Need a young guy with young eyes. Put an LED on my welding hood and that's much better

I upgraded my 4' fluorescent fixtures in my garage with LED replacements from Menards. No more ballast, no more flicker, lots of light, and they work when it's cold out. The ceiling is white corrugated plastic roofing, light and easy to install and won't fall on the car when the roof leaks the way the sheetrock did, twice.

I have some special LED magnetic strips that are made for the 4 post lift in my garage that are killer when working under the car. This was shot with no flash - just the lift lights

If you are going to replace fluorescent lights with LED tubes do some research first as there are various "tones" or colors to the light emitted. Basically the higher K value is more bluer or "cold" and the lower is more like the incandescent bulbs (3000K-5000K). I intend to use around 3000-3500 to replace the lights in my kitchen , and 4000-5000 for the garage.
Also one of the problems with flourescents is the ballast going bad , so I'm going to get the LEDs that you need to rewire and eliminate the ballast. I'm not certain , but I think these may use less energy than the direct replacement ones that still use the ballast

  11. I have 4ft- 4 bulb LED lights in my shop, plenty of light, very easy on the electric bill.

You don't need to buy a whole new light system. You can byp*** the ballast in your old system by snipping the wires and toggling them together properly. TOO EASY. We do this at work for mods on our lighting system. This way you only have to buy the light tubes. LED's only use the power source to light them so no need to replace the ballast. LED's do burn alot cooler than incandescent bulbs and use a ton less wattage.

Converted garage to LED. Consumption is about 20% of fluorescent and about half again more illumination. Plus no ballasts to replace with lamp life of 7 years continuous use. Tough to beat new LED product. Only negative is that LED isn't instant start.

Sunlight is 5500K. I use 5000K 4 foot LED lights. I have them mounted at a 45 degree angle 8 feet high on the sidewalls and and a couple on the ceiling.
