Good topic, it's something that has been on my mind recently and I'm interested in reading the responses here. FWIW, no I don't have a spare and as of yet I don't carry any tools needed to change a tire if I get a flat. I do have AAA and usually have a cel phone, but if I'm out of cel phone range, I'm pretty much screwed.

  5. Definitely a spare tire & jack guy. Too many places around here with poor or no cel service (yes, I live in the dingleberries) to depend on phone-in roadside assistance. Spare is a space saver, it'll get me home or somewhere. And no bias-ply for me, I want at least a shot at being able to buy a tire on the road if I have to...

I've thought about that, especially the guys that run big and littles. The little probably wouldn't be a problem, but the big I would think would be almost always.

  8. I usually try and plan a spare into a build. Not always easy.
When I was young you could normally find a tire to get by on at any service station. Not so much these days, most places wouldn't sell you a used tire if it still had the nubs on it.

No spares on board. I try to keep good tires on the cars and keep my cell phone charged. I keep plenty of tools and some spare parts in the trunk to fix other other mechanical or electrical problems though.

No the 39 is a Wescott bodied car with a coupe style trunk. There is room for a spare and easy access unlike you would have with the rumble seat model 39. But which size tire would I carry? If I packed two spares there would be no room for luggage. If packed just one size then the Murphy's law says I would have the wrong one on board.........So I pack a cell phone and insurance card.....

  15. Late model cars only have one spare and it seldom matches what is on the car. All they are for is to get you to the tire shop.

I carry tire plugs when I have a car that has tubeless tires. A 12V tire inflator and some plugs will get you home every time.

    I always carry a
won road trips and the one time I really needed it was when I ran over a piece of scrap iron about 10 miles north of Dumas TX in 110 degree heat. What ever I hit came around and punched a hole out though the top of the fender.
It didn't take long to change the tire but I did get road tar on the back side of the piece of carpet we were using in the camper on the 48. A used tire was pretty spendy in Pueblo Co that day.
I've got to agree with P-n-B in that the little spares are get you to the next tire store units but normally that is all you need out of one. Either get to the closest tire store or get home if you are local to home.
I've got one of those skinny spares out of a mid 80's rig that I often carry for a spare locally and it may go behind the seat when I stretch the cab on the truck. It could hold a subwoofer pretty easily and multi task. After reading P-n-B's post above that skinny little bugger has got me home more than once.

Auto Club is fine except if you still want to get to your location on time and its Sunday and no shops are open with your odd tire size, let alone an inner tube or know how to install one. My last 2 cars had no spare and I had to hunt around for a stock rim and get a tire mounted. I can now get back on the road in 15 minutes, not be flat beeded to somewhere to rot.

Been stuck once out and about without a spare for my 61 f100, not again, a spare in the box is better than a flatbed ride/service call/etc.

  21. OK I'll bite- whats a Tire Pando ? Is that the "foamy crud in a can"?
Even if you are with one of those roadside assist (AAA, etc) mobs, Do they carry tubes, compressor, plug kits, de-beaders, or turn up and say "Yep, you got a flat tire, do you have a serviceable spare? If you dont, I will arrange a tow". Or do they fill up your tyre with the foamy crud (they sell it as "SSSHHHH" here!), and send you on your way?
I've been told more than once that once you are home, the tyre should be removed completely and the gunk washed out, and then left to fully dry, as the gunk will slowly eat it's way into the casing. Or is this an urban myth?
I can't see them (AAA) trying to hunt down a rim& tire for you.

  22. Always....at my age, I don't want the 5-6 mile or more walk ...as I travel a lot of secondary roads...and even if it's not perfect, I'd rather not have someone else take it while I'm walking to a station....

Not sure about others....but I worked in a tire store in southern Oregon for 5 years, and whenever anyone would bring in a tire that had been ''repaired'' with that emergency foamy inflatable gunk, we'd hands-down tell them we can't repair it! That stuff would NEVER hold a patch again as solid as it should, no matter how much one tried to scrub and clean it....I even tried myself couple times to see if I could get a tire to take a repair patch after the stuff was inside the tire, and no...it just caused problems and we always told people to write the tire off if they used that inflatable gunk. Like I say, other's may have gotten a patch ''to take'' in their own experiences, but I'm not sure how... I wouldn't trust it myself.....once ya' use it, ...the tubeless tire or if it punctured a tube, was toast and wasn't worth the extra caution....of course, it's all based on my own personal experience in a tire repair shop;)....I wouldn't use the stuff.

IMG_1881.JPG Danny, late to the party here but decided to carry a spare. Found a brand new old 600 x 16 never mounted at the dump and figured it would fit the bill as like Petejoe said

You can,t bring everything you may need when a breakdown occurs so over the years I've kept my CAA up with the Rv package, this allows me to call a roll back instead of wheel lift tow truck and it came in handy when one of my rear coil overs broke.

The Lincoln has a pretty huge trunk, so yes, I carry a spare. I think it's a Ranger pickup wheel, proper 5x4.5 bolt pattern, with a tire that is about 1" taller than the fronts, and 1" shorter than the rears. Plenty of room in the fenders so it fits both ends well if I ever have to use it. It's ugly, but it's only temporary, so the heck with it. Also carry a small bottle jack and a screw jack out of some GM car. Screw jack to get it high enough to put bottle jack under axle.
Also keep a cheapo socket set/end wrench set, a few screw drivers, small pull bar, vise grips and a hammer for small emergencies. And my cell phone and pistol, just in case!

My OT 86 Vette that I recently got rid of still had the factory spare in the under car carrier, looked like it had never been taken out. I was going to take it out and check it for rot, but the hold bolt was rusted tight, I couldn't break it loose. Lot of good it would have done if I had ever had a flat.
