I don't know much about 40 Merc flatheads. Can't you just replace the ring gear?

  3. That's what I thought^^^^^.

  4. Ring gears aren't expensive and you can replace (after removing the old) by setting the new on the flywheel and running a torch around and around to expand the ring. Might have to persuade it a bit to drop on. Or, most any of the flathead flywheels for your vintage will fit.
Most t-5s up to '93 are the ones the adapters are made for. Newer than that-I don't think so.

What he meas by that is, all T5's made 1993-on have the FORD bellhousing pattern, irrespective of what they came in. So yes, even if it was in a GM vehicle, it had the Ford bellhousing pattern.

Prior to that, the T5 could be had in either the GM/Muncie/Saginaw pattern, or the Ford pattern.

The S10 T5 is a common one to use, as it has a longer input shaft, that allows for adapters, and such.

Not the absolute Ideal thing but if the teeth are just worn on one side and the other side is good I have heated a number of ring gears up taken them off the flywheel and flipped them over and put them back on.
One of the guys more familiar with those engines and flywheels hopefully can give you a link for a ring gear. I'm not finding a Mercury specific listing and one site says Same year Ford fits but a guy would need more positive confirmation than that.
