I'm looking at moving to the farmington New Mexico area are there any shops hiring or looking to hire I've got about 15-18 years of experience in the paint and body world and powdercoating and tig welding and turning wrenches.

Probably not what you wanted, but there are a lot of oil wells out there... should be good $$$ for a welder, eh? Gary

I used to have relatives that lived in the area and yea lots of oil companies. If you can turn a wrench and do some welding someone will hire you. Do you speak Spanish? I did some contract welding for a guy here in Oklahoma city a few years ago and he had sold some stuff in that area. Also depends on the price of crude if anyone is hiring or laying off this week as well

  6. I live in Durango just an hour north of Farmington and I hate to say that the economy there is pretty bad. Oil and gas is dead in the four corners. All the drilling rigs are parked but there is a glimmer of hope for things picking up this summer. Of course cars and trucks are still getting wrecked everyday so you may be okay. Moving to Aztec might be a good idea because you are only thirty five minutes to Durango and more jobs.

I've traveled thru' Farmington & Bloomfield all the time...I lived in northern NM till I came to CO a few years ago....man, it's dry, flat, and long distances of nothingness outside of the city....I never knew anyone who 'wanted' to move there before, to be honest....everyone I knew has moved 'out'....but hey...to each his own;), ....I agree Aztec has more opportunities to consider, and closer to Durango.....survival might be an issue in Farmington.....I hope you really check it out realistically , before you decide to put all your emphasis in this one spot. Most of NM is really struggling economically at this time....particularly the places where tourists don't tend to visit in droves (Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque)

I know the area well and think you'll have good success in finding a job. There are lots of shops and they all are very busy.

Don't let those guy's negativity get you down. Farmington is actually really booming, especially the north side. It's not all green like Michigan, but it definitely has a beauty of its own. And in 45 minutes you can be in some of the most beautiful mountains you've ever seen in your life.

I have a couple contacts there and I'll see if they know of anything.

Here's some demographic data on Farmington. https://suburbanstats.org/population/new-mexico/how-many-people-live-in-farmington. You may be isolationist and only want to speak English, but 22% of the population there is Latino or Hispanic. That doesn't mean, at all, that they don't speak English, and, of course, the vast majority will be citizens, but it does mean that you are potentially turning away 1 out of every 5 cash paying customers. I don't know many businesses that can successfully afford to do that. Just a thought. Have a good move.

  12. The wife and I were down there Saturday and judging by all the for rent signs I don't think you will have any problem finding some space to work. Since you are not looking for oil and gas work you will probably be fine. Farmington is the largest city in the four corners area and it provides services an shopping for a very large area. You know people are coming from a long way away when the grocery stores offer dry ice for the frozen food.

Yeah, probably not the best locale if you don't like hispanic people! LOL. Or native Americans for that matter.

I don't know about hot rods, but I think 4Wheel Drive's are exceedingly popular in the area, especially up around the Durango area. I think a guy could keep busy building, servicing them. And from spring till fall there is a lot of RV traffic through the area, a guy could also keep plenty busy servicing modern pickup's, doing road service calls, etc. If you got mechanical aptitude and skills I'd think you could support yourself and family just fine.

If the price of oil ever goes back up there's always work in the oil and gas fields.

  15. There is a pretty big car culture in the four corners. There are several car shows and events between Farmington, Durango, Cortez and Pagosa Springs. There is quite a bit of 4x4 action also.

How odd. I have lived in he good ole USA my whole life, and:
    Yo hablo espanol.
    Je parle francais.
    Ich habe Deutsch gelesen.
    Legere Latin.

That choice, especially so where you are moving, may limit your employment opportunities. The desert Southwest is still heavily populated with families that have been there, living on the land that their families have owned since before it was part of the United States, and folks who have lived there, since there ancestors walked there, 10,000-15,000 years ago.

I don't mean to sound predigest, really don't but here in Albuquerque we have a major problem with alcoholic Native Americans, enough so if I could move I would. They live on the street, always around, I can't go anywhere without them begging for some change, they use my parking lot as a restroom, leave their trash behind. I've had to call the cops humerus times because they'll be passed out in front of my door or become belligerent when I try to run them off but my customers won't come in if they are there. I had one pissing all over the front of one of my customers trucks at 9am, drunk on his ass. I cannot stress how big a problem this has become, if it's this bad in Albuquerque I can't imagine how bad it is in Farmington where they have a much larger Native population. I know it's about to destroy Gallup. If you move to Farmington don't say I didn't warn you. New Mexico use to be a great place to live, not any more.

  21. I go to Farmington quite often for jobs and to pick up material and I have not seen a native problem. I know they're there but it isn't as bad as down south. Shiprock and Gallup are pretty bad. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. As I said before, if I had to move south I would settle around Aztec. Quick access to Farmington and Durango.

Yes, I saw that on a trip to NM-I thought Gallup was particularly sad and gritty. OTOH, you might want to proofread your post. "predigest" is what a cow does; I think you mean "prejudiced". Similarly, "humerus" is your upper arm bone; I think you might mean "numerous". No problems, though, I'm a veterinarian and I always enjoy a medical post. :)

Guess I shouldn't said anything about Farmington, haven't been up there in many years. I just assumed it would be as bad as here and Gallup. I will agree it's close to some really beautiful country to the north.

  28. Apparently not. The = they?

  29. If you do good work, you'll grow a following and succeed pretty much anywhere you move.
But if you're living from paycheck to paycheck, you take what you can get for a while and build your rep a little slower.
Good luck with the move. From the replies so far, it sounds like you can make your own opportunities there.
