In this case I think it's a "selfmade" Kübelwagen.

  4. Probably loaded backwards to take as much weight off the tongue of the trailer as possible. The Merc had soft suspension to begin with, and has now been lowered.
Used to see a lot of shorty dragsters backwards on trailers to put the engine, the bulk of the weight, over the axle of the trailer.
Still, you are right. Towing that rig would have been "interesting".

Hey, thanks for that, I spent a good while reading up on that. I only related what the caption says. A google search on the burning car image only comes up with "England" so it must be an internet myth that gets repeated and becomes the established "truth"..

I like the tangents this thread generates.

Thank you for posting all the photos! I'd never seen the one you posted of the car on fire at Daytona. Just so you know how my mind works, the first clue I saw that helped me ID the car were the louvers on the bottom of the tail, rather odd or unique. Google is great, but you can't bank on it 100%. If I see a post here I try to ID the car, hope it helps pass along whatever history I may have picked up along the way. Bob

Can someone tell me if that is a Connecticut plate on the Locomobile? It will help confirm who owned the MILLER front drive. Bob upload_2017-3-3_14-47-10.png

Appears to be a Illinois plate, don't know who owned the car but the driver is Frank Elliott.

I'm fairly sure this is the same MILLER in the above photo with the Locomobile. It was once owned by George Weaver here in Connecticut before the INDY 500 Museum got it. It is the first front drive and to my eye sits a lot lower than all the others, and has a wider radiator. Bob upload_2017-3-3_20-33-19.png

I believe the Indy museum Miller was the Erskin #1 driven by Harry Hartz in 1927, the #5 was owned and driven by Elliott in 1927.

I've felt guilty about enjoying this thread every night without contributing for a long time. Found a little time earlier this week and think I've found some new material.
All the photos are from Harrisburg Pa in the 50's. They all look new to me, but if I just found some previously photos please let me know.
