Hot Rods PAINTING YOUR ENGINE

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Mar 19, 2017.

  1. In all fairness, the idea of body color engine works well and every street rod took it over. Sadly the street rod isn't looked at from a view point of "let's see what's traditional here".
So as we walk past rows upon rows of red Tupperware deuces with red engines and billet accessories it's easy to say it t looks street roddy.

Dogs have tails, ergo, it has a tail, its a dog.:D That seems to be the dominant line of reasoning around here.
And channeled is an "east coast" look because most of the cars in the "square roll bar" book were channeled, and that books about east coast hot rods. The fact that probably 80% of the fenderless hot rod everywhere else in the country were channeled in the mid-late fifties never enters into it, right?:D

  5. i painted the motor red like my dad did back in the late fifties. i never repainted the valve covers, the painted has lasted all these years. DSCF4146.JPG DSCF4079.JPG

I went with VHT shake 'n shoot Gold Flake. I figured the engine compartment needed some pizzazz since the outside finish is pretty bland.

Ford Red on most engines; even my Caddy's. Mopar Green on the B & RB engines. Flatheads will be Ford Red or Green.

where I come from there are no motors that look good yellow. even in a yellow T bucket where the motor is staring you right in the face. Chevrolets need to be orange, black or charcoal colored. if a motor is in the car it came in I think I would always paint it factory colors, one thing for sure, you can never go wrong with a black motor in a HOT ROD.

that's my 2 cents, which by the way, costs 4 cents to make.

  17. My old roadster had a orange engine in a orange car.

I guess it was a street rod. HRP

that was when I went through a bunch of magazines from 1955/1960, and took all the photos, car features, readers letters, and for sale ads, and tabulated them by region and build style, IE: channeled with no fenders, channeled with cycle fenders, unchannelled no fenders, ect, and did a thread on the results. A lot of guys weren't very enthusiastic about the results.:p

I will go out on a limb and just take a guess, most of the Ford high performance engines in the early/mid sixties period were black. I can take a look at some old photos.

Back in the 50's,I must add mitt to painting a few bad ,what now is looked at as super ugly or just crazy LOL; Red Seal Cont. 4cly in dayglo pinkist OJ with black trim an chrome acorns, plus first redo on my Olds Rocket v8 was dayglo green with gold an black !. OK, look ,dayglo was really new an seemed cool at the time with its stand out boom to your eye color to 16 year old teen. That fad lasted like 6 months before it made me sick of that crap forever. HA HA.
So after getting some better ideas, the red seal 4cly went to its death with that crappy paint, But I did my Y-block Ford in yellow an black for my 28A ,then repainted my Olds V8 gold with some black high lights with chrome were I could get it cheep for my Henry J custom.. 26. Most People seem to have an insatiable need to be labeled and to label everything.

They desire to have the perceived favorable label and will attempt to redefine the term so it suits their situation instead. They also will steal the label and attempt to apply it to themselves. Bring this up or point it out and speak the truth to these type of people will then immediately apply to you with some label that is very far from "speaker of truth" ! Most likely the label will be some antonym of truth. Just look around

I wouldn't take this as conclusive proof that they all were, but this is one of the Shelby American team cars having its engine pulled after Daytona in '64, flat black.

there was a DOHC GT40 street car built after the fact, but all the FIA GT-40s (basically all the factory race cars) had pushrod small blocks or 427's. The DOHC motors were Indy cars and a handful of sprint cars and Can-Am cars, they were never homologated for FIA competition.
