Although I never made it up there, Alcoa was quite an active location for night time drag racing in the 60's. Many of the older guys at my high school went there to watch and race.

Route 66, looking east in my ol' hometown of Barstow, CA. The Sears store used to be the old Forum Theater, I saw The Big Wheel, with Mickey Rooney there when I was a lad. The Village is still there and still serves good food I hear. This was a lively cruising area back in the 50's.

  6. The Alcoa aluminum plants, using electricity from the new Bonneville Dam were instrumental in making airplanes and winning the war. I remember them still operating as a kid into the 60's, but I guess they are shut down and gone now. Is that right?

  7. That should read "The CharleyW Turnpike". I feel I've paid for it several times over!

Now-a-days, we just grouse about the salt rusting away the wheel wells, frame, brake lines, etc.

this photo is from "Irvington" in what is now Fremont, Ca. the car is a Stutz. the 3 large buildings on the right are still there, the left side is all gone. probably "main street" back then, Fremont Blvd @ Washington Blvd now. known as "5 corners" since 5 roads all met in the middle up the road... I live a couple miles from here.

This is my son, age 2 helping me work on our 77 Pontiac. And don't give me any flack about the bumper jack. I had a concrete block under the frame in case the jack failed! I know this is supposed to be a vintage picture thread but this shot is 40 years old. mechanic 2.jpg
