This method worked well for me on my '36 and on a '46 Chevy p-u cab I did previously......

I'm pretty sure the stands you listed will work. It appears that the top piece swivels but it wouldn't have to. The threaded shaft remains stationary as the handle is turned. They have a 33 inch range which should be enough. Depending on the height needed you might be able to lift it by the roof with a couple of 4x4s through the windows.

Couple weeks ago, we had to lift a Tudor body on and off the ch***is several times; borrowed two extra cherry pickers and used a long 4x4 thru the windows. Actually worked better than I would have thought.

I took the body off my 50 Pontiac using a floor jack and various wood blocks to get the front up first, then the rear. once it was high enough, I built the "swing set" looking part, and used Armstrong braces on it. The top piece of wood already had that bow in it before I used it in this setup. The wood pieces came from a local sawmill. The back is up on a couple sturdy sawhorses in the picture.

I built my own Gantry crane. I'm actually building another one to sell if anyone is interested. I use mine for picking up motors, bodies, ECT. [IMG]

It's one of those items that once I had it. I don't know why I didn't build one years ago.

  9. I have one too. Love it !!!
I cheated and bought mine though, it was cheaper than I could make it. I modified some of the things I didn't like and made it better. After I had it in the shop I wondered why I went so long without it. Then my buddy brought me an electric hoist, I thought I died and went to heaven. I wish mine was just a little bit wider to straddle the fendes on my trailer.

Harbor freight has adjustable height one ton gantries for $730. You can probably find a 20% off coupon.

Yea going wide is good. This other one I'm building I'm going another foot wider. Same 3x3 construction. But powder coat it red. Not gray.

the first time I took a body off I just used my floor jack and ***orted blocks of wood, then set it in more blocks with 2X 6's holding it up. probably had the cherry picker in there as well... this ain't rocket surgery.

I pulled the body off a VW Bug with a strong oak limb, a 6' step ladder, a come along, and four 2" ratchet straps fastened to the bumper brackets. When I got it high enough, I had some 8' wide saw horses that I had built out of landscape timbers that I sat it down on and rolled the frame out from under it. You do what you have to do.....or can afford at the time.

Topher 5150, I thought the products I used were called Armstrong - they are actually Simpson StrongTie, and they have a large line of braces, etc. for construction. Home Depot, Lowes, and others usually have them.

Found a bunch of 3"x 4"s in the back yard that I'm going to use. I went through two sawzall blades to get six pieces. Anyone know what this wood is

I'm always hesitant to lift a car body by putting something through the doors and lifting by the roof... god forbid you forget to undo a bolt and stretch the **** out of your roof (no offence tagman but I nearly ****ped when I saw it done to a '36 3 w:eek:) you'd be surprised at what a cherry picker and some ratchet straps will do. I picked up a full size truck box, flipped it and installed it all by myself with just that. Last time I used a pair of camper jacks (not the hydraulic bolt on ones) the old tripod mechanical winch/cable style for the sides with the cherry picker lifting from the trunk area....what ever you do don't use "stands" like these! lol:p IMG-20160908-01169.jpg IMG-20160908-01168.jpg IMG-20160908-01170.jpg IMG-20160908-01171.jpg

  21. That has got to be one of the hokeyest setups I've seen. That should be a what not to do

    Hence the caveat!;)
actually I removed the camper jacks and "posed" it like that for the pics :Dlol I knew it would horrify and make people wonder how it got up there...5 minutes later a trailer was under it and off she went for more surgery....I'll try to get a pic of the camper jacks i'm talking about... the point is I did this job by myself with minimal effort using (stand alone camper jacks and engine hoist) items usually found around the yard (or a buddy/neighbour has) and lifted from the bottom instead by the roof which could have distorted this fragile shell and/or damaged the roof panel which I needed (and no animals were injured during the filming lol)
