No on the electric fuel pumps !! They were not allowed on the cars at Reading.

  2. @toml24 Those are amazing! Thanks so much!

Gene the more I look at it the more it looks like a 94 with a napkin hose clamped over the top of it while it's being worked on?!

For some reason I have not been getting notice on updates on this thread anymore, and I had to resubscribe. I have some catching up to do. :)
After the fire tragedy in 1953, the new promoters wouldn't allow electric fuel pumps.

  9. I've been slowly picking away at the engine to get it ready for some paint. I also picked up some 5" Wide wheels for the rear and a grooving iron to doctor up my tires a bit.

    IMG_1989.JPG

I've been lusting after a tire machine lately as well and this little guy popped up on Craigslist for $200 so I snapped it up! There is always plenty of tire work around the farm.
    IMG_2161.JPG

I meantioned to my pal Chris ( @2muchstuff) that I was looking for a bias ply tire to replace the uggo one on the front and he walked right over to his pile, grabbed an orphan wheel with the perfect tire for me and even dismounted it! Thanks Chris!

    IMG_2144.JPG

Looks much better and almost matches the 13" tire on the left side.

    IMG_2145.JPG

So tonight I am in the midst of getting the red wheels cleaned up and prepped for some white paint as it used to have. Hopefully I can get them painted and the tires mounted this weekend? We'll see!

  10. I got the tires mounted up and just finished grooving them. I can't wait to see them on the car!

Yesterday I went to a local car show and I ran into an old high school friend. His uncle was Meme DeSantis and his dad was a crew member on the #14. He said he may have some photos of your car.

He also remembers when the car was first restored some years ago and he told me that it was a very accurate restoration, but then the car was sold and the new owner raced it in some vintage races and rolled the car. Then the car got "restored" to it's present configuration. He agreed with me that it was not as good as the original restoration and the color was too red and the shocks were wrong.

We had a great conversation and he recalled hanging out at Tommy Hinner****z's garage with his dad and uncle and meeting A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti there once.

  13. I put the rears on and jacked up the front to pull the wheel but haven't swapped tires yet. I've been so busy with the house and now another project I brought home that she's a little neglected! Plus, when I put the rears on it was the first time I saw how really badly racked the back of the body is on the frame. The wheels that were on it had different offsets that kind of hid it a little bit. It is shifted over to the driver's side by 3 or 4" and I kind of got disillusioned with how bad it looks. Funny that Al should come on and enlightenment as to why, ha! I actually spent way more time cleaning up and painting the engine as well so that has slowed things down a bit.

It is not a very good "restoration" at all, ha! Man that's cool that these guys are still around to fill in the blanks. Is Meme still with us? Does he know Russ Delp? I would love, Love, LOVE to see any and all pics he has. I can give you my email addy to p*** on if you'd like Al or just post them here if you get them as you've kept this thread alive!

Well, now you know why it is racked.

I'll probably see this guy again next week when I go to the Syracuse Nationals. He's looking to buy a '55 Chevy like he had in high school.

Meme DeSantis died quite a while ago, but my buddy told me that he just saw Russ Delp last week.

Just consider the offset as adding left side weight :) Hope to see more pics when you get a chance.

  17. Haha! Yes!

Well this is neat. A friend sent this pic last night that popped up on the Facebook!
Looks to be late as it appears to have the QC rear with the Frankland drums that it still wears. I am in awe that pics of this car keep materializing!

Would that be a little brake light on the catwalk?

Yes, that would most likely be a tail light. attachment-7.jpg Like on the #11.

That pic is from the Northern Ohio Cars thread on Jimmies Old Time Racing, probably posted by denracer, who also post on the HAMB. Great site, if anyone has not been there, I highly recommend it.

I saw my old friend in Syracuse. He said he couldn't find any pictures from back in the day, but he does have some from the first restoration. I'll get them from him sometime. Also he said he thinks his cousin may have some pictures.

That is probably a brake light. A lot of the cars had brake lights on them because they flat towed them.

  23. I've been trying to get a roadster back on the road for the last 6 months so no real updates to speak of but I did get another pic of the car sent to me yesterday! Zach Suhr happened upon it while at the EMMR museum. It was on an old hard drive and appears to be from the 80s when it was restored initially. So cool! image.jpeg

  24. I forgot to mention that I got these old dirt trackers back in September. They came up for sale out in the PNW and my good pal @Chris delivered them to me at the Hot Rod Hill Climb and my other pal Chris (@2muchstuff) hauled them back to Kansas for me! Now I'm on the hunt again for some wider 16" wide 5s. I'll probably use the others for a trailer to haul the #14 around.

I'm an effort to get things off the workbench and because it warmed up a little this weekend, I was able to get the new water pumps painted and another coat of paint on the engine.

My 2018 list includes getting this thing running/driving again!

Looks like the power plant is almost ready to drop in!

If you’re interested in making your own wide 5’s it’s a pretty simple ordeal. Think I posted on my thread, but just need wide 5 centers, and late model Honda Civic wheels. The Ford center literally drops into the Civic hoops. Check for clearance, true them up, and weld them together.

Cactus , if I may be that informal; glad to see you back on this puppy. One thing I 've thought of several times... The town name is Temple , it's a suburb of the city of Reading. You may want to alter it in the thread ***le. I'm still groovn' on your awesome Abone.

Forgot you even had this one lol

I’d probably just make your existing wheels wider. My buddy pat just did some for a project and said it was pretty much as simple as you’d think. Remove the Center and weld them up into a wider hoop. Think speedway sells new hoops?

Jig it up with something to check true and go after it I suppose. I think he may have used a spare spindle/ hub or maybe a tire balancing machine with a gauge to check runnout

Yes they’re 16”. I believe they were 8.5” wide, but I’d have to double check. The 8.90-16’s have a little bulge to them, but still fit nice.

I ended up buying a set of 4 for like $75 on Craigslist or something (always good to have extras haha). If I remember right, I couldn’t find any aftermarket hoops that would fit exactly.
