Technical shaken not stirred

is there any reason automotive paint can't be shaken. i was offered a paint shaker, the type used at homecheapo to shake house paint but was told automotive paint shouldn't be shaken.
will shaking it cause a problem with the paints ability to bond. before i lay out any money [a pretty penny] i need to know.

 

I used to buy paint at an automotive paint dealer, (that's all they sold) it was always shaken on the same type of shaker that was used for house paint at the big box/building supply places.
I think someone blew smoke up your you-know-where!

 

They just told you that so they could get the shaker for themselves

 

I always shake my filler, primer and paint before using them and I have never had a problem. I know the parts store where I buy my paint always shakes it after they mix it.

I have been shaking auto paint since 1965 with no problems, from Dulux straight enamel, to base coat clear coat and everything in between.

 

hmmm a little deception.........

i was never able to spy how the store i get my paint from does it.

 

good, then i will shake the living day lights out of it.

with that much experience i bet nobody does it better......

 

Was it April 1rst? You say there was a smell in the air as you mutter "Your full of it" to yourself...You know who not to get advice from in the future.

 

Stirred and shaken many kinds of paints and finish materials over the years, by hand mostly, but never would have thought of this one.
Save the big coin for the caressing/vibrating paint mixers special designed for Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance paint standards.
They hardly come up for sale and are always ******ed up before anybody even knows about it.

 

Just make sure the lid is on good, it could make a very expensive mess.

 

I'm no paint expert by any means, but the last paint I picked up at the paint store for my 40 they put it on a shaker after adding the tint's to it. It did not get used for probably another 2 weeks or so but none the less they shook it.

 

Retired last year after almost 50 years from my family's automotive paint store. Couldn't tell you how many thousands cans of auto paint I shook in my life.

the unit came out of a walmart store. $300 bucks, looks like new. should last me a while but only diamonds are forever.

the machine has a set of Jaws that clamp it tight.

 

yeah i will never take advice from him again, but then again you never can't say never again.

 

A power shaker works great for rattle cans, too.

Isn't it boat varnish that gets bubbles in it if you shake it? Heard that 45 years ago and remember it, still haven't painted a boat. Bob

 

Tell em ya know where theres a barn full of 32's...Seriously there is alot of incompetents in ***istance these days. You would get a great deal on a paint shaker from him however.

 

You don't want to shake striping enamel. You'll have a jagged line. . Lippy

 

I buy adhesive in 5 gallon pails. I got tired of shaking the can before opening it for the first time. So I roll it around in my paved alley behind my house. It has a little slope to it so it always comes back to me. Cheaper than a shaker and it`s easy on my arms. I watched my neighbor shake a aerosol can for five minutes once. I use more than 150 aerosol cans a year. I might roll them around in my alley as well. I`m guessing they`re to light and won`t roll back to me. What do you think.

I've never shaken a 1/2 full can of paint- wonder if that makes a difference

 

Thank you for this. It`s on my list to build. On a side note, I`ve been cutting my cans apart to get the marble. $300 is cheap for a paint shaker, how much are expensive ones. I might have to mount my sawsall on my table, the vibrating action might be harder on my elbow than just by just shaking the can normally.

That's right- any clear urethane that is going to be brushed or rolled on wood- you don't want to shake- stirred only or the bubbles will kill your hard work.
I shake all my automotive paint with an air powered shaker I bought at HFT

 

My Harbor Freight paint shaker has served me well for years.

 

They always shake my paint at the paint store.GRAB that shaker!!!Bruce
