I found this a while back while rummaging through an old mechanic's barn in Arizona a couple years ago. I just found it in a box and thought I'd get your input on what it's originally intended use was. Looks to be made of a thick aluminum and most likely had some sort of suspension and chin strap. Well I got a glass helmet that is the same shape mine is an old roller derby helmet. But I got an idea that @gimpyshotrods is correct in his assessment.
rixtasan, I thing that helmet was for the safety team to clean up the mess easier after a crash. everything stayed in the bucket. Those drivers were fearless.
Here's one I got but it has a sun visor. This one is from the 40s oops and it's not made of aluminum.
