Here's mine. Mines going to pretty much be a stock chassis. Original 34 shocks all the way around, 1940 rear with 40 brakes front and back. Stock front end. Early production 1949 331 Cadillac, 1937 LaSalle toploader converted to torque tube.

This one's a little more on the wilder side of things. The front end is kicked out a bit, solid mounted 9", center steer, blown + injected small block. Shooting for 554, 15oz, hyders garage, tire smoking mayhem.

How much did you take out of the grille to keep the look? Those Model 40 coupes look just sooo bad ass with a deeper channel in the front.

Now, that just SCREAMS hotrod, a cruising, have mucho fun, go anywhere ride. I have a question. Why did the East coast boys channel the shit out of their coupes and not chop the top while the West coast boys hammered their coupes and seldom channeled them? I remember as a kid in the '50's seeing the different styles of coupes/roadsters and wondering even then why guys did what they did on each coast? Were the cars in California driven by short guys, hence no clearance problems with a chopped top, and did the car bodies in New Jersey, say, have rotted floors, hence, gotta cut it out anyway ? I've heard from a very reliable source that East coast rides were channeled so the driver didn't show so much of his body. Since he was Italian, he was less of a "target" when he cruised down the boulevard. Now I hope a dead fish doesn't appear in my bed tonight. LOL

I think that east coast style and west coast style is sort of exaggerated as there were a lot of cars on the west coast being built like the coupe in my first post- a west coast car- for example. I think it comes down to style though- like cuffing your jeans I suppose.

Check this out- this is the rear section of 41 frame laying over my 34- there will be more kickup with this section and it'll fix the bad patch in the back of the frame- really cool how close they are in design!

I'm kinda shocked how close the 33/34 frame is to that '41 frame, looks like with a different front crossmember and reworked frame horns you could damn near use a whole 41-48 frame under a '33, am I wrong?

Do you know what has happened to this car ? Last I heard it was in the Manawatu region. Curious to know if anyone is rebuilding it to how it appears here. I have the '32 grille from this picture still in it's purple paint.
    Thanks.
    (Apologies for the thread hi-jack)

Nothing fancy. Flattened crossmember front and rear, 283, 2" chop. Not finished but getting ready for paint soon.

  12. IMG_0714.JPG IMG_0716.JPG IMG_0717.JPG IMG_0719.JPG Tuck, I have a few mods you might like. It an ongoing project you may have seen here before. I'm doing bodywork now. I will finish this. Finished exhaust headers a couple weeks ago. Progress is being made. Look at my old build thread for details on frame mods. This was a stock frame when I started on the Curbspeed Coupe IMG_0713.JPG

  14. Those profile similarities are amazing - I can pick up a '41 frame for a few hundred as opposed to a '33/'34 for $1000+. I wonder what all would need to be reworked to get the rails to follow the outer contours?

Halibrandsteve there was an article in hot rod magazine years ago can't remember the issue that had a roadster belonging to Henry Rootlieb that was built on a 41 frame and used fenders as well as other body parts from a 33 Ford.

  16. Really? Wow...I wouldn't have thought there would be anything compatible between those years...

  17. There is a couple crusty frames for sale in the classified area in Detroit if your looking Halibrandsteve.

This car was in Motueka about 1975 or so. A friend and I went to see it he was keen on buying it, it had the small block in at that stage, a 5 bolt bellhousing engine, touted as a 289 but could have been a 260.
He never bought it but another mate ended up with the engine which he still has to this day. I have a feeling that the rest of the car went down the coast Greymouth probably. How did you come by the grille?

Grille was on trade-me, about 5-6 years ago. ( I might still use it, but would prefer to see it go back on the 34 in the photos)
Discussion with Paul Grace suggests the body was in the Manawatu region at that time.
    Thanks,
    Clemens.

What happened to this thread being about new ideas for 33-34 chassis design? I see some stock stuff, a neat idea for a 41 swap and a bunch of off topic blabbering.

  29. Not much "new" ideas here in the entire Hamb. Some but very few. Some has been done less than others i guess as well.
