Located on the corner of 3rd St. and La Cienega Blvd. in L.A. When it opened it was billed as the World's Largest Drug Store. I don't believe the Rexall company is around anymore...

 

Oh yeah.Stacking swivels.That was something that you did`nt mention around my Father or his oldest brother.They were WW1 vets.

Another train going through the center of town. This one is pretty sleek...


Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island, 22 miles off shore from the California coast. Catalina is part of Los Angeles County now, but it used to belong entirely to William Wrigley, the chewing gum magnate from Chicago. Wrigley bought the island in 1919. This photo predates the building of the famed Casino landmark. The big house in the middle of the photo is where the Wrigley's lived, and it's still there, open for the tourists to see. One of the reasons he bought the island (as the story goes) was to have a place for his baseball team (Chicago Cubs, which he purchased in 1916) to hold Spring Training. He never went down to watch in person but he had a very powerful telescope installed in this house so he could watch his pitchers...


Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, the end of the line for east to west passenger train service. The Santa Fe Super Chief needed to have the brakes applied a little sooner, according to a year long, $300,000 investigation, as to how this could have happened...


If you look carefully, you can see the L.A. policeman in the middle of the intersection, directing traffic...


The very beginning of Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. Mrs. Knott sold her Boysenberry Pies from this stand. Eventually, all the berry fields on both sides of the road in the background became part of the Knott's Berry Farm Theme Park, which still operates today...


Yes, it snows in Los Angeles, once ever thirty years or so. This light dusting is enough to keep any reasonably intelligent Angeleno off the Hollywood Freeway. Natural disasters like this "snow storm" would have the Mayor of L.A. calling the Governor of California, who would then call the President of the United States and declare the entire City of L.A. a Disaster Area, requesting the National Guard and low interest loans from the Feds to pay for the clean-up...

We used to drive from Hartford, CT to Rangeley, ME up I-91 to St. Johnsbury and then take Rt. 2 over to Rt. 16.

Rangeley ME, town park, hasn't changed a bit. I can feel the breeze off of the lake and smell the pines.

 

PORTLAND, OREGON 1920 PAPER DELIVERY TO THE OREGONIAN
Truck is front wheel drive with solid tires and chain drive. unknown make but many were assembled in Portland. Oregon Transfer Company, Drayage - Storage has been in Portland for about 150 years. 6th Ave side of old Oregonian Building. This truck was very hard to steer and provided extremely rough ride.

A young Johnny Capels in a New Mexico area supermodified. Capels ran both supers and sprint cars and even won a USAC race in the ex-ECCA sprinter before becoming a full time mechanic. He later became the president of CART and still later the CEO of the United States Auto Club. I don't about today but just a couple of years ago I know he was still serving on the NASCAR appeals board.

My dad's side of the family lived in or near Valencia in then. The photo in question is of my grandmother and she passed away almost 30 years ago so I can't find out.

 

Here is a slightly more zoomed in view of the Miller front drive. I've been a transmission engineer for more years than I care to remember, and this one is very interesting. Miller was a very innovative engineer.


I had to study it to work out what was going on. If anyone is interested and doesn't already know how it works I will attempt to explain. I will use the universal right and left as from the drivers seat.

The motor drives in to a pinion meshed with the large bevel gear (Typical ring and pinion). It is not connected to the diff housing, but drives through a hollow shaft into the gearbox on the right. The gearbox does it's stuff and drives out through another hollow shaft (inside the first) to the diff carrier on the left. From there a shaft passes through the other two shafts out to the right side, through a joint and to the right front hub. A shorter shaft takes the drive through a joint and out to the left hub. (More joints at the hubs). Also clearly noticeable are the inboard brakes.

That's what I think it does anyway, I worked it out from first principles, rather than having any prior knowledge of the Miller cars.

It appears to be a three speed; correct?

 

I seem to remember reading a description somewhere indicating that they were two speeds. Sorta makes sense as that center cog appears to be on a slider.

 

I also read "two speed" somewhere, but I think that particular model is three speed and reverse. I found a cad model illustration and that looks like three speed. the two speed may have been referring to another model.

Edit: I found mention in a book about the transmission, saying it was a 3 speed, and was only used to get gingerly up to speed and then stay in top. The problem was that the gears were after the final drive, not before it as normal. The torque the gears had to handle was much higher than conventional gearboxes and the design necessitated slim gears due to space limitations.

So it was a three speed but not great.
