It looks like it had a nice access cover to get at the gears easily. I guess the designer had foreseen the potential for any failures and made it easy to fix.

My brother-in-laws family owns the largest privately owned piece of property on Catalina, just over 3 acres and they also have the only house with a swimming pool. The pool is in the shape of the Island. He and his brother lived on the island until they were 8 years old when they moved to Long Beach. He'd never seen a traffic light until then. lol That was in the mid '60s.

 

They brought back commercial flights for a while in the '90s. My wife's mom and dad lived there and my wife took the flights a few times. It was great because they took off from Long Beach.
