  5. Erin Moran - Happy Days. Looked for a "vintage pic" of her in a car - didn't find one.

  15. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Before the bright yellow and blue sign on Sillect Avenue could welcome visitors and locals to Bakersfield, the Bakersfield sign used to be somewhere else in town.

Also known as the Bakersfield arch, the sign stood on Union Avenue just south of California Avenue.

Originally meant to be a foot bridge to connect the Bakersfield Inn with it's newer building across the street, the sign was built in 1949.

The arched sign was also meant to welcome incoming drivers.

But some may ask, why put Bakersfield's landmark on Union Avenue?

Years before California State Route 99 was built, Union Avenue was part of the Golden State Highway U.S. 99.

It was the main connector between northern and southern California through the San Joaquin Valley.

By the late 1990s, the sign was in bad shape, the motel had shut down and no one was maintaining the sign.

Caltrans decided to remove it, fearing it would collapse on the road.

But Bakersfield country music legend, Buck Owens, came to the rescue.

In 1999, Owens purchased the old sign and rebuilt it next to the Crystal Palace.

That's where iconic landmark still stands to this day, greeting those driving in and out of Bakersfield.

  16. Awesome. I have one of those coils out in the tractor shed - something the old man had. Wonder what he thought it would do for his old Studie tho...

This forum is movin' too fast!
Only yesterday AppleKrate asked about the big cylinders.
Here in the UK we call them Gasometers, they used to store Town Gas, now they're full of natural gas. there's a water seal between the inner and outer cylinder, and the inner one rises as it fills with gas.
    Hope this helps.

By gas I don't mean gasoline.
If I remember right, town gas was made by forcing super-heated steam over coke (toasted coal) can't remember the chemical reaction. Natural gas comes out of the ground (in our case, oil wells in the North Sea) and back in the day the government converted all our gas appliances to "North Sea Gas" as it was then called.
I think the gasometers are becoming obsolete, gas is stored under pressure now.

    Sorry,
The last couple of posts didn't include any automobile pictures.
As an excuse, I've noticed some repeats recently, so here's one I liked, from December 2016

Looking south in this 1940's photo of Lake Ave in Rochester, New York. The large building is the Eastman Kodak Company headquarters tower which is still there today. A few of the smaller brick buildings on the left are also still there.
