History Have you ever used a trailer for tools & luggage when traveling?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Mar 31, 2017.

  1. On road trips when our twin girls were kids and they rode in the back seat of my 40 Ford sedan we used a Mullins trailer to haul all the necessity for a week on the road going to events across the country.

This is not mine but very similar, ours has black walls.

Today,it's just the two of us and the back seat of the '32 sedan is used to haul everything we require on a road trip. HRP

Guilty. Not to brag, but I haven't packed a tool roll, aside from a bottle jack and lug wrench, for the past 15 years. 13238939_10153644052112776_5139584242062227716_n.jpg

For Hot Rod travels, No trailer, but when I took my 32 on road trips, had built a trailer hitch for it and used a utility rack about 24" x 48" x 10 " deep for pop up tent, chair's cooler, duffle bag, etc., Worked slick, as you know a 32 3 window does not have much trunk space and 2 people fill up the cockpit.

Back in 79, when fuel was iffy, I put a fuel tank in the Mullins trailer, with an outboard boat coupler, and could travel long distances, sure that I could make it. My Model A wouldn't hold much in its stock tank. LOL

I bought a small motorcycle luggage trailer to pull behind the roadster for overnighters. Not much room in a 17 T

Yes, I pull a 1980s Coleman two wheel trailer behind my hotrod. I put a 16 gallon fuel cell in it for a lot farther between stops. Plenty of room for extras, luggage , little white bags full of stuff the ladies bring out of all those stores.Etc.

  8. 20161105_112511.jpeg 4x8 aluminum trailer for me. It holds everything a crew of two can use for a weeks worth of nitro racing during drag week. Slicks are mounted to the front. A tool box and vice are on the back. A flip up aluminum bench is on the side. Pulling the hitch out allows the parachute to be reconnected. View attachment 3495245 We use it for other events to. I have a trailer for the T.
No choice if you're on an overnight trip really! LoL
Fitz built the body from leftover car and truck bits, while I built the axle, frame, tow bar and the car hitch.
Tows great, and the tow bar is telescopic so we could collapse it to fit the car and trailer combo into the "under 20' " ferry guidelines...thus saving some bucks on each ride off the island! :D

Why yes I have Danny. My friends and I built a glass Mullins luggage trailer before my first drive out to the LARS, around 2001. Since we were doing the trip in four days each way and crashing in motels the trailer almost seemed more trouble than it was worth. From then on if it didn't fit in the trunk of my '32 roadster it didn't go.

  12. I bought a trailer to pull behind the Harley, so when I built the roadster I made a removable hitch to pull the same trailer. Makes road trips a lot easier. D.Smith Bike Show 09 003.jpg

Over the years we have put many miles on the 34 coupe. The little space in it has been outgrown. We have a Mullins with a glass body on an original frame. It hauls chairs, easy ups, large coolers, souviners, tool boxes and whatever else we might find along the way.

I've always liked the looks of those Mullins trailers. May end up with one of the fiberglass repops one of these days and build the frame myself. My Lincoln has a fairly long trunk, but not real tall the way the rear drops off. Extra space would be nice sometimes.

When I was at the Sturgis motor cycle many years ago I saw someone made a trailer for their bike out of an old shopping cart. Took the castors off the front and made a tongue on that side and replaced the wheels on the handle end with small trailer tires. Great idea for a bike. would work for a rod too. The bikers has a cooler and camping gear in the cart.

After I built my track roadster in '69, we went to Peoria with it, and the 1st NSRA Nats. Wasn't bad as far as luggage goes, bunch of us went, and the "chase car" carried ours. Next year was Memphis and a lot farther for us. I saw an old Sears one wheel trailer for sale, bought it, made a new box and made axle brackets to hook it to the roadster. Now THAT works! Never knew it was back there, and backing up? You could back up forever and be in perfect control!!! All my cars since the roadster were big enough for luggage, although I did consider another one for my 32 4dr sedan project.-------------------Now, an interesting aside. When I first built my Avatar 48, I set it up to pull a 12 foot "Scamp" travel trailer. At that time I had Haggerty insurance on the truck. I called Haggerty to insure my trailer also. They would not insure the trailer, not even for liabilty! They flat out stated they would not insure a specialty vehicle towing a trailer. They said they would not insure a luggage trailer either! This was in 1990. I switched over to State Farm (my main insurance carrier) and of course had no issues with coverage. I don't what the specialty car insurers stand is today. Bill Rinaldi

Used one for years for my late wife handicap scooter. When she passed away I left it pack up and store it.

I've never pulled a trailer for luggage or tools. I can travel really light, if needed.

Then again, I'm pretty good at filling the available space...you should see my Chevy II packed up for Drag Week.

I built this one frame scratch, sold it with the truck. Takes 2 connection points like a wheelbarrow.
Only negative is in a cross wind it acts like an airplane rudder

When I was a little kid Dad pulled a small pickup box trailer behind the '33 tudor (no trunk for the family of four) when we went to any overnight stays. It was made from a metermaid cart's box, I think a Cushman if I recall correctly. About half size of a Model A pickup box, but pretty much the same shape. Looked appropriate with matching '35 wires mounted up.

A few years later and I had a '39 Chevy tudor with enough trunk for three families.

Are trailers generally designed for motor cycles equally suited for automotive use?

I've got an old tear drop trailer frame made out of Model T frame rails that are welded together with Ford wide 5 wheels and V8 hubcaps that will end up as a teardrop again one of these days and primarily carry the extra stuff.
