Projects 1959 edsel ranger build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hotrodmnm, Mar 30, 2017.

  1. Good Luck with your project.
Here's Dad's, bought new in '59. 13 year old me bought spinners and screwed them to the stock hubcaps.
4 door hardtop Ranger if I remember correctly.

  3. Headliner bows, they have an order to them. From the factory they have a color-code on them which may be gone since its a dot of paint, so if they come out, tag them. I've been told that the back glass has to come out for the headliner to be tucked in, I'd ask around when you get to that. The window gasket is available, same as the '59 Ford.

I didn't replace the floor. Just cleaned it super good. I do still have one spot to patch on the drivers side. But it was pretty solid before, just extremely dirty. It's funny what a wire brush can do.

Are you kidding? Someone did a bad job on my headliner and was thinking about redoing it. Not now.

Doing a good job keep it up , good advice on the chrome and glass the previous owner of mne was careless with the grinder my windsheald has tiny bubbles in the laminate where hot sparks have hit, doesnt affect the vision but its annoying and could have been prevented
Here is mine as it is at the moment

  7. Maybe the back glass does have to come out to do it right. I would ask at an upholstery shop first. This is what my glass guy shared with me.

  8. I cleaned my floor pretty well. It had primer on it but had the old rubber mat and that jute backing stuck to it. Got it cleaned, primed a few spots and shot a quart of white lacquer over it, Duplicolor from Auto Zone. I found a patched piece about 5" x 7" by the gas pedal, it was fiberglassed over but looked solid. The panel under the back seat is thin plywood cut to fit.

So today, I got the back fender halfway done. Before I ran out of sanding disks. [IMG]

Also I we took these wheels off an old jaguar we have, I think I'm going to put these on my car. They are old wires. What do you guys think?[IMG][IMG]

I like the original look better, to be perfectly honest with you. I have a nice set of Edsel wheel covers available in case you're interested....

I think the Jag wheels are Chevy bolt pattern (5 x 4.75") not Ford, but I could be wrong.

I also don't like wire wheels, but it's not my car, it's your car.

I guess its where your going with your car. What look are you after. I like spokes on the Edsel. I've seen one somewhere and if I find it will get you pics. I like the originals also and that's how I went with mine. The originals with the spinners looked the best but are hard to find. The spinners were gone off of mine so I made the spinners.

Post up a shot of your car or find one like it on the "Photoshop" thread. This way you can check out different options for wheels.

Yes they are. But they're old enough that they had the "multi pattern" so they were built to fit multiple patterns. They fit ford as well.

Pretty cool putting 59 Caddy taillights in the center of the originals!

Use a box cutter or similar blade and scrape the glass, this will remove most of the metal bits, and prevent rust appearing on the glass, it works pretty good , Gene Winfield told me this , it will make some difference.

You are going to have a great ride. A razor blade will take off a lot of paint with no damage to anything else. No scuff marks on the metal etc.

  20. Hotrodmnm, when you are using the "scotchbrite" wheels, do not using any pressure as it will wear out the material very fast. I noticed the deep swirl marks in the metal. I did my 47 Ford p/u body and doors that had at least 5 coats of paint using only one wheel.

So she is back at it, went and bought more sanding pads and another grinder, she had a small delay ... had to clean her room [emoji23]. So here is a pic of her hard at work taking off the door chrome. 20170415_202617.jpg

You can always run both the wires and the stockers for a different look....just takes 20 nuts to change the look!
    (I like wires!!:))
Glad to see a young woman getting into this hobby AND doing the work

I'm not sure on paint. I originally wanted to do it turquoise and white. But as I have looked further in to it, I have been considering red and white, and black and white. I love the way your car looks!

If you are thinking of painting it any time soon leave the chrome off and put it back on after painting it. That makes for less time taping it all and easier sanding because you don't have to worry about accidentally sanding the chrome. :)
