Last I knew you couldn't have fuel anywhere near the firewall. Check Fuel Systems, my old book is section 1.5.

You are correct. I tried the same thing mounting the fuel reg. on the firewall and tech inspector said move it.

Hmmm. Well that is exciting. I guess I had just assumed as long as it was on the correct side of the firewall all was good....? Last year all my fuel lines were mounted to the firewall. Thanks...I think...LOL

Well hell...you are correct on the fuel. It is an NHRA Rule only. It is apparently in place to protect the fuel lines in case a of trans failure however it seems to be a mute point if you are running a scatter shield. Apparently according to NHRA it CAN be mounted there if it is somehow extended 6" from it....

Well the build goes on at this point NHRA not with standing...:p We have really killed the knock out list so far this weekend. I will not bore you with the details of torquing lug nuts etc. But we did make a few changes along the way. To begin with the new Morris style accelerator cable did not get along at all with my gasser style pedal at all. So we had to fabricate an arm of some kind to attach to the pedal etc. After searching the usually places in the shop for scrap metal and parts etc. I found this:

    Resized_20170430_065525.jpeg
This is an aluminum lower radiator mount arm from which we only used the top half. The arm was the exact length we needed so we recycled this part. After a bit of nip and tuck this is what we got...

    Resized_20170430_065355.jpeg
It works perfectly. We installed it using long enough screws to allow for a tow pull we are fabricating to bolted on in the same spot. We will have it in place before the first test run etc..,

The fuel pump was certainly not a direct replacement for the round one however we needed it in the same spot. Here is the old mount where to original one sat.

    Resized_20170429_204655.jpeg
We have plumbed everything basically the same so we had to build a new bracket that would bolt to both the new fuel pump and then still be able to bolt it to the old mount...

    Resized_20170429_225222.jpeg
    It worked out really well.

    Resized_20170429_225216.jpeg
We are hard lined 12AN size from the cell to pump with the fuel filter in the middle. Having a 90 degree on both ends of the hard line make it much easier to remove. I didn't do that the first time around and basically had to loosen the fuel cell to install or remove the fuel line etc. We have 45 degree elbow leaving the pump and into the second fuel filter and then the braided Teflon line to the front. Should be really easy access to both filters.

The new ECM wiring harness is a mess. It is huge. Honestly we were looking at it and after all the sensors were plugged in and the remainder fed through the firewall, we could have mounted the control box on the trunk firewall (which we honestly considered). The problem was what to do with all its bulk in such a small space under the dash. My answer was make a bigger space under the dash...

    Resized_20170429_225403.jpeg
So we took a piece of .040 aluminum scrap the width of the dash or at least from the passenger side roll cage down tube to about even with the driver's side of the trans cover. We cut it 10" tall and then broke it 90 degrees down the middle giving us a 5" self behind the face to set all the folded up harness and other access wire etc. PLUS it finally allowed me the place to put the Cessna artificial horizon gauge that got left out the first time around...

This was one the funny little things I was looking forward to having in the car during the initial build. I am excited to finally get it in place.

I hate to say it but I would probably trade the Austin straight up for it. It is an awesome old race car.

Well we put the finishing touches on the Austin tonight just after 6:30 this evening. All we had left on the knock out list was prime the engine oil, drop in the distributor, hook up the spark plug wires and fuel her. One day to spare before the dyno.

Here is we hat she looked two hours later at 8:30. Very long story.

That would be a Morse cable mate. A "Morris" cable would have been the crappy original stranded unit that came with the car (Austin, Morris etc were all the same family) :)

Sorry for the delay. Well we had her completely finished. We even had the interior sheet metal back in place and driver's seat reinstalled.

I decided to go ahead and prime the motor so we could stab the distributor. I inserted my home made tool attached to the cordless Dewalt and started spinning.

About 45 seconds into the process the drill suddenly picked up RPMs. Basically it stopped pumping oil and was just free spinning the pump. I looked over at Dad and said that's not good either something has broke or we are out of oil.

Dad walked over to have a look and said we are out of oil. I said where did it go. He said I am standing in it. I looked down to see a oil puddle creeping like thin green lava from under the car.

I hopped down from the metal milk crate I had been standing on which was quickly being engulfed in the ooze. Dad started tossing floor dry and I started accessing the problem.

The oil was still pouring out of the black so it was easy to see the culprit. It was coming out like a gooey waterfall from between the block and the scatter shield. I knew immediately what had happened. There was a missing block plug up in there somewhere.

Have you ever seen a grown man cry? Well Dad's did when the Dewalt I threw hit him! Just kidding. But I was certainly looking for something to throw and we were both fairly dejected.

Only one thing to do....start taking her apart again.....

Great build and that is one bad boy gasser, I had the same thing happen to my 427 when I spun it only I did mine while it was on my stand and made it easy to deal with but if I had done it after it was in the car I would be a grown man crying to, thank goodness I decided to see how well the pump was going to work along with the piling system, lol

Well..... I guess that it's good that it happened with a drill and not while it was running!

Sorry man, that sucks. But just think of the stories you'll be able to tell everyone about "this old Britt I used to date"!! LoL!

I see a license update and a lot of throttle pedal travel.
