I need to see if there is any possible way someone knows the colors used for the numbers on Jr Johnson's '64 Galaxie. In 2004 my '64 Galaxie convertible was T-boned. Approximately 2005 I bought the quarter panel off of a JR replica car I had seen at an all Ford show in Anaheim CA. Just last year I finally got the quarter panel on my car. I decided that I like the yellow quarter on there too much to remove the decals on there and paint it red so I painted the door yellow today with the intention of adding the #27 to the car and somewhere, top of the door or something 'Junior Johnson Nascar 1964' or something like that so people don't think i'm just advertising a chicken farm. There are some that know what that quarter is but most don't. Rather than decals I want the numbers painted on instead.
Anyone have any clue as to what those colors are?

Below is a pic of my car before and after. The door that was replaced was wrong red and oxidized anyway. If they made that peel off paint in the right color or it wasn't so spendy for a wrap i'd have it in yellow too but it's still the original paint. Would be fun though, one side yellow etc. There are some that hate it but it's mine, I'm going to have fun with it. :)
Also a pic of the car the quarter panel came off of after it was wrecked.

  2. Weird as it is, I kinda like your idea. Seems like any good body shop could scan that quarter panel and come up with a matching color. May have to be custom mixed to get a close match. Be nice if you could get in touch with Jr. He's no spring chicken now but, I bet he's still pretty sharp, might even remember some details about the colors. He's one of my all-time heroes for sure, a true mechanical genius. Good luck and enjoy your Galaxie however you choose to .

If I understand your question, you want to know the color used for the number 27 itself, not the yellow body color. Is that correct? Have you tried an internet search for pics of the original Junior Johnson Galaxie racer?

Since your quarter panel came from a 'tribute' or 'replica', and the number 27 on that car was red, doesn't it seem likely that red was the color on Junior's original racer? Ot, am I missing something here?

If you use red for the numeral, why not the same red as your car's original shade of red?

I would guess that the red is just standard One Shot red, but it could be faded, and the lettering paint also gets custom mixed on the spot for a bit lighter/darker shade..Good luck.

Looks like Phoenician yellow, with red one shot to me. Those cars got knocked around a good bit so it was probably a ford color and not a special mix.

The quarter panel i did have analyzed to get paint mixed for the door. It is in fact Phoenician yellow which surprised me that who ever painted the car used an actual Ford color. But the paint shop i was at could only give me a 2 stage of that color. We did manage to find a good match in single to be mixed in a rattle can for the door. It's a little brighter and of course shiny but is probably how the quarter looked before the sun faded it.

The red lettering on the quarter is decals but color wise seem to match Jr's car from '64. I might hit a paint shop again and see what they can tell me on what color it could be. I don't think it's Rangoon red which is what my car is but i do have a rattle can of that which i was originally going to use on my door. Maybe i need to just give it a spray on a piese of paper and hold it up to the lettering and see how well it matches. Rangoon just sometimes looks orangey and the lettering doesn't. I might try sending an email to Jr and see if he might actually know. He is 85 now. Thanks for the replies and thoughts. Since the yellow was a ford color there is a good chance the original colors of the numbers were also, like mentioned.

A friend that lived near Jr was going to take a picture of my quarter panel to hm and have him sign it but i never sent it. Now it's finally on the car and the friend moved to the coast of NC. Just my luck!

I have fun with the car, that's what they are for. I have a rooster that stands in the back seat and a jar (filled with water now) of Jr's moonshine that i have in an old wooden box with straw and some other mason jars. But I started out with frogs, my 390 is bright green and blue with frogs on it. Think i'm starting a zoo! I don't worry bout hand prints on it, Some old guys come hang out and gab at cruises or shows with me and use the car to lean on cause they are elderly and it holds them up and i just clean them off when i go out the next time and start over. I enjoy the fact that it's a car that can be touched and i don't have that $20k paint job etc. Made my own seat covers for the front, still gotta do the back yet, still the original paint which holds several dents, scratches and rope imprints, lots of stories of the almost 40 yrs I've had it. Plus i do my own work on it, except body work, a friend put the quarter on for me. Just don't trust anyone else to do it if I'm capable of doing it and I'm too cheap to pay someone for something I can do myself. I call it my longest lasting relationship!

Pigfluxer I've seen that video, beautiful noise there! I found a modeling thread discussing racers from that era and they were discussing Junior and his car. There were 2 yellow '64s, one was a brighter yellow and got demolished by Lil Bud Moore in a #45? dodge. It was creamed! There is also a pic of what someone said was pearl yellow or they call it that anyway, in the background and the mighty 427 hanging ready for installation.

Fred Lorenzen #28 I have on facebook but not sure how he's doing as he's suffering from alzheimers and his son and he relays msgs to his dad. I might ask though as 45 yrs ago is easier to remember than 45 mins ago!

I'll try my luck at finding an email address for Junior also. They didn't do the fancy stuff back then with paint that they do now in addition to that, it might only last one race and need repairs.

Here's one of the clips for the movie Redline 7000 that Pigfluxer mentioned.

I originally wasn't going to leave the quarter yellow even though i hated the thought of destroying it, if i ever got it on the car but that red just tied it into the red of my car and i liked it and kinda embraced it so to speak. :) I just bet that if it isn't rangoon red like the car it's darn close.

Any of the '64 Galaxies and Customs I love. But probably has a lot to do with falling in love with mine the first time i saw it in 1974. I do a lot of "stalking" of these cars also, stop and look at them, leave a not on them... A friend now left a note on my car when at the junkyard a few years ago. He said he had a '62 and to call so I called, let him know of some car shows and cruises in the area and never met the guy. Couple years later i discover the guy helping another friend put my quarter panel on the car was this same guy. Small world! I had told the one next time he would be more careful who's car he asks to look at and the other guy said yeah and who's car you leave notes on. I asked what? I thought i still had his phone number so checked, nope no peter or pete. Then i look for '62 galaxie and there was the number. I put car types in along with initials or something so i remember who's number it is. Sometimes I don't know their names for a long time, it's the chevy guy, javelin guy etc. :)
