It was hotter than Monkey Love yesterday on my way home from Steel in Motion and the temperature climbed as I sat at several lights, nothing to get excited about but it got me to thinking.

Where should the temperature sending unit be mounted on a small block Chevy, the head, the intake or maybe a stretch but the water pump? HRP

  3. Don't you mean the temp sender, not the thermostat?

All I've ever seen for SBCs is at the front of the intake manifold. If we're talking about temperature senders then it is either at the front of the intake manifold or the water pump from what I've seen.

Thermostat, in the intake under the gooseneck.
Sending unit, intake or head. Never seen one in the water pump, but I'm sure some were.

water pump gets cooled water from the radiator...which would be nice to know the temp of, but won't really tell you how hot the engine is.

Chevy put the sender in the intake until the late 60s, then they switched to the head. I don't know why.

The coolant temp is best measured near the thermostat, while the cylinder head temperature location will tell you how hot the hottest part of the engine is really getting.

factory has lots of them in the heads for years , my O/t has the gauge for me in the heads and the computers is below the waterneck in the manifold . being computer need the information better for operation , I would say the crossover by the waterneck . as you see the true total heat being output .

If you put the sender in the water outlet, above the thermostat, it won't tell you how warm the engine is until the thermostat opens

the ported goosenecks were for ported vacuum valves for emissions controls in the 70-80's

and you will find out what the temp is when the thermostat doesn't open and overheats

Head reads a little hotter than the intake. I run mine in the head because of that. I think it was like 10 degrees hotter but it's been a while since I done a test on this.

more than likely because the gauge will see heat faster vs the waterneck , and at the time we were more worried about getting too hot ( over 180) vs not hot enough (195 is lower operating range ) . plus they were using the crossover as a point for the dreaded emission vacuum port valves .

Danny what's your setup as far as fan, radiator size etc? A Zip's water pump/riser setup allows a much larger fan on early Fords with sbc, and if you get the 6 cyl. heavy duty alum. water pump from Auto Zone as Randy (Deuce Roadster) used and have a decent radiator and a 6 blade fan as large as width of radiator it'll never heat up. BGII has withstood repeated back to back runs in a row at SIM, each followed by the snail's pace of that vendor's row nesting on the return road, never got over 180/190* with no coolant loss:cool:

Dave,I have the zips riser and the big fan on the old deuce beater sedan & I also had the same setup on my Deuce pickup but I haven't done this on the mordor,I'm not sure if I am gonna keep it or send it down the road. HRP

Chris,Hotter than Monkey Love is a more of a dogma than anything.

Just a exaggerated reference of how excited monkeys would be at the apex of****ual arousal, kinda like hotter than a 4 balled tom cat or hotter than the hinges of Hell!

    All Southern localisms . HRP

Nice to know its a genuine Corvette engine.

  28. Danny, I'm sure you know this but if you have used teflon tape or thread sealant, the sender won't get a good ground and will read crazy. If you have one of those cheap laser temp guns, shoot the area next to it and see if it's accurate.

I guess I need to pick one of those laser temperature guns up,it would probably be pretty handy. HRP

If you have one of those "cheap" infrared temp guns you can wonder if it is the gun or the temp sending unit that is off!
