    thanks!

    I got the rest of the parts for the brakes today, so I could get the wheels back on, get it on the ground again, and go for a drive. After a little issue with a partly plugged fuel line, it's running and driving pretty darn good. The smoke has died down considerably...I'll see how the compression is doing, and how the plugs look, after I put some more miles on it. I might just leave the engine alone.

    Sure is a different kind of car, to drive. Quiet up front, not much sound from the back. Handles pretty well. I set the air in the tires at 20 psi front, 30 rear, because that seems to be what works well with radials on these cars (original specs for bias tires is 15 front/ 26 rear).

    I had a 65 as my day to day.....I kept 2 concrete blocks in the front and a full tank of gas.
    Got around great in the snow.
    I cut back the engine fan just to the edge of the fan shroud...no cooling problems and gave it some more pep.
    Need to make sure the exhaust flap bellows are working.

    Flat Rate for me was 9.00 an hour when , I put the wrenches in my box for the last time . R&R Engine in a 4x4 factory modified van . Manual said 12 Hrs , it took me 34 Hrs , last big defeat for my pay . I went to school , became a Stationary Enginner and got more level pay check and used someone else's tools . 37 years later back in my tool box again enjoying wrenching for less than 9.00 an hour , but it's a fun retirement hobby !

    Z = Powerglide
    F = used for 1961 89hp, 1962-63 102 HP, and 1964 110 motors

    The numbers on the distributor and heads will finish telling the tale, but I would expect it to be a 102.

    We pulled a bunch of these out of various barns, coops, fields, and holes. Almost every one could be made to run and run well with a bit on Marvel Mystery oil and fresh gas, after we cleaned all the mouse houses out of the heads to keep from burning them up. They always started out rattling like a can full of ball bearings and shaking, and then would smooth out after a while. Tough little engines.

    I built late models, but have a love for all things Corvair. You have exactly the right temperament for them based on your past escapades. You are fixin' to have a good time!

    It's been pretty fun so far. And challenging....the gen light came on progressively more and more, so I got to play with the voltage regulator for a while. I think it's happy now. Soon as I got that sorted out, the oil light started blinking on at random times. I put a gauge in, now I'll see what that's doing.

    Ramblers aren't real popular, but they also weren't really knowns as lemons.

    But I have considered them, quite a bit :)

    Oh, don't do that on account of me. But do it, because it needs to be done :)

    Had a bad sending unit for the oil light, it looked almost new, but it probably was pretty old. Fixed that, time for more test driving.

    I noticed a turbocharger in the classifieds for your vair. You can always use a bit more boost.

    A bit off topic but my girlfriends Dad has a 46 Lincoln continental. In with the paperwork that came
    with the car was a receipt for an engine rebuild. V-12 overhaul $99. Can't make out the date on it.

    if you want to make turboing it easy , I will try to find the local guy who adapted a 301 pontiac turbo assy ( t3 with bolt on Qjet manifold assy and built in wastegate , he moded it for a 500 cfm holley ) and made his own intake manifold for it, it looks pretty good . only problems were icing in humid weather from the air flow , and the turbo was upgraded to a hybrid t3/t4 unit

    this is the upper manifold assy [IMG]
    he machined the carb mount and welded a spacer on with a square bore mount on it as the carb mount is staggered underneith .. ( has water heating to prevent icing )

    I'm not interested in doing anything like that to this car...just want to get it so it will make a trip without exploding. But it does sound fun

    I have acess to one if you interested ... My dad always wanted a spyder version as he had the regular ones ( I learned to drive stick in his ) he said the spyder ones were fun to drive but acted like they wanted more boost . ( I had a 301 and off turbo its a not even a pooch , but spooled up it was pretty decent , but IMO pontiac should have put it on a d port head motor .

    I decided to pull the powertrain out and work on the engine that way...didn't take long to drop it out. I pulled off one head, and ended up taking all the cylinders off that side, honing them, installing NORS rings that I got cheap on ebay. I'm reusing the gaskets, because I'm cheap and lazy, and it's not likely to leak any antifreeze. There was a broken ring on the hole that had kind of low compression, and some pitting in the hole that liked to oil foul the plug, and stuck oil rings, and some wear on the rings, etc. We'll see how it does with my quickie $20 ring job. I'm half way done now, ready to tackle the other side.

    That brings back memories.
    Good luck!
    They say and I have done was to cut the fan back to the rib....no effect on cooling and gives it just a little more snap.

  24. I can tell you I'm on the hunt for a '65 TO '69 Corvair Monza.
    I have discovered, based on the simplicity of the car, the engine is easily removed.
    There is a "Corvair Owners" forum on facebook.

    What's so top secret in the crank case that you don't want us to see ? Or is it just to toy with us ?

    I'm more anal about that. There wouldn't be any openings. Now you know how the question came about.

    hey, it's just an old corvair engine.

    And I found an even worse cylinder on the other side....lotsa rusty pits, probably gonna pump a bunch of oil still, unless I find another one.
