I'm installing a small block chevy in a 1947 Ford Coupe. The car has the original running gear and steering box and I'm wondering what exhaust/headers I need. I know when using the stock steering box some clearance issues come up. If some one can direct me to a link showing the conversion that would help as well. Thanks in advance
The Ram Horn manifolds work pretty well. Just another thought, you're in Wichita, only two hours north of me. If it helps you and if you want to drive down and see how the exhaust is ran on my 34 Sedan (has a SBC), you're welcome to come on down. We can put it on jack stands and you can crawl all over and take as many pictures as your little heart desires. You can get you some bacon cheese fries from Eskimo Joes while you're here.
Use a R/H truck rams-horn on the driver's side; it aims forward to clear the box. A regular straight down one works on the passenger side.
If you can't locate a cast iron manifold you can use Sanderson Headers part no. CC-4. The passenger side exits towards the front of the car. The biggest issue is the steering box. You are going to do some intricate bending and welding to clear the box. I also made a heat shield to protect the steering box from the exhaust cooking the lubrication in it.
Here are pics of my 46' with a 283 installed. As mentioned earlier, use the ram horn manifolds. As you can see on the left side, the manifold clears the steering box. Hope this helps.
The earlier ram horn with the tilted outlet sure looks to be the ticket though I've got a normal set on mine. Makes a very quick bend right away and clears
