I know what the pinion shaft gear looks like. But could someone post a photo or link of the steering shaft and worm gear?? I'd really like to see what that looks like! Thanks! Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Or tell me what the steering shaft and worm looks like! I invision a shaft that each end rides in a bearing and nothing more than a corkscrew worm to drive the large helical cut pinion gear! Am I close? Could it be that simple? No wonder it's hard to turn when sitting still! Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
This is not a Schroeder box pictured but can anyone confirm that this is what they look like inside? I would guess it's pretty close by the layout! Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
This is not a Schroeder and it is a duplex steering meaning two pitman arms, two drag links, and no tie rod. Schroeder made some like this but the construction is basically the same as it would apply to a single worm steering gear. In this case, the two sets of spur gears on both ends of the worm shafts simply reverse the direction of the second pitman arm. The bores for the worm gear shaft bearing races are oversize and have an eccentric insert that is positioned to adjust the worm in and out of the worm gear to achieve slight backlash. The eccentrics are held in place (rotationally) by the set screws locked by the square nuts in the last photo.
Thanks! I think the Schroeder works on the same principle. I am thinking it has a simple worm gear on a shaft and a large worm wheel for the pinion. To my knowledge, there is no adjustment for free play in a Schroeder box, I maybe wrong? Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I believe you'll find it has a similar eccentric adjustment. Incidentally, a spur gear is a straight cut gear, the correct terminology is worm gear and mating worm wheel or gear.
I got Gary's number from the company he sold, been calling for days, no answer! Thought he might be at the Roadster Show. Do you have a number? Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If it has an eccentric adjustment it's not at all visable or obvious. I called the Schroeder company he sold they told me he was still making steering boxes. They gave me his phone number, but no one answers! I would love to see a blow-up but can't find one anywhere! Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
here is my schroder box i tore down i could not get a hold of them either i was looking for the outer seal. i was able to get one threw national seal . I pressed off the end of the coupler to shorten the tube but needed a shorter shaft i need the shortest one the produced if i had known i would have order it then and there .
