That plate says "United States of America". Was it a military plate?

  2. This Alfa Romeo P3 was driven by Tazio Nuvolari to win the 1935 German Grand Prix. It came to New Zealand after WW2 and was raced for several year before being retired about 1960. It was restored in the 1970s and is now in a collection in Switzerland (I think) having changed hand for several million dollars. The colour pic is out of period as it show the car at a classic race meeting in 1980. 3. Another one that is out of period but most will know of Scott Dixon, racing in Indy cars. I was reminded of him by a new report of his race at Iowa yesterday. Here he is after one of his early wins.

  4. There was a race meeting held at Wigram Air Force Base every year from 1949 until 1994 when the base was closed. It is now a housing subdivision. This is the 1956 event; the start grid and a shot taken from the control tower just after the start. There are some famous cars there, many of which still exist. lady wigram 56 grid.jpg lady wigram 56.jpg

  5. One car prominent in the second shot in the post above - #136497 is the Edelbrock Special of Frank Shuter. Here it is a few years later at the Nelson beach races. The yellow license plates were current 1961-64. Shuter Nelson.jpg

  6. Another shot of the same car as above in an earlier form, not later than 1956 by the license plate. The coupe behind it is a 1938 Studebaker President. Probably quite rare in right hand drive. Timaru hillclimb early '50s.jpg

  7. George Smith was a well know local driver in the 1950s. He was renowned for carrying a bag of apples with him in the car and throwing the cores at the race marshals as he passed. This was the first car he imported, an Allard which at the time had an Ardun ohv conversion on its flat head V8. The car still exists but now with a Cadillac ohv V8. The Allard and his other homebuilt special The Gee Cee Ess can be seen in this link which is the January 1984 Dunedin Classic Festival Road Race meeting. Yours truly was driving the Pontiac seen in a couple of shots. There are several pages in the link with info on the some of the earlier Dunedin events and other NZ cars. http://www.theroaringseason.com/sho...-Races-revival-meeting-January-1984&styleid=5 George Smith Allard.jpg

  10. A couple of shots of a well known locally constructed race car, the Ransley Riley, at the Dunedin Road races in the 1950s. The car continued to race in classic event until the 1990s and is now in a small museum in Oamaru (see last colour pic). I think the #414 car in that pic is the #8 car in the beach racing shot above #136502.

  11. Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1961. The loco is Ka935 which still exists. P Nth 61 Ka 935.jpg

  12. Palmerston North, New Zealand, 1950. Traffic control for the local horse race meeting. Our US style Fords were mostly sourced from Canada for local assembly but our Buicks came from Flint. P Nth 50 a.jpg P Nth 50.jpg

  13. The old McKenzie Stage that operated between Bend and Eugene, OR. Before this it was an open wagon with rows of seats drawn by horses.

  15. This is Day's Bay, Eastbourne, near Wellington, New Zealand in 1957. Plenty of pre WW2 cars still on the road. The Morris Minor was probably the best selling small car here at that time. As always there is an E series Vauxhall lurking - at far right. The '55 Chev is a NZ spec model Deluxe, six cylinder and three on the tree. From '56 on the NZ assembled cars were V8 Bel Airs - all sourced from Canada. Days Bay Eastbourne Wgtn 57.jpg

  17. I know, I know, this image was just posted here. But the Cocker Spaniels across the top of the building got me interested, because I've owned 2 show winning English Cockers (I'm a braggard).

So I looked for the image. Found a place where it was posted and it said:
    "Minderjährig Fräulein & '41 Buick"

So anyway, I thought that was cool.

"As GM designers returned from WWII, GM Design's VP, Harley Earl, encouraged them create concepts that were far ahead of the market. This Pontiac "Twin Streak" rendering drawn by noted designer Ned Nickles is a great example."

That looks like the legislature bldgs in Victoria , B.C. The map of Vancouver Island gives it away.

It was driven by Don Prudhomme who is still active as a team owner. Tom Greer was the owner of Greer Machinery Shop in Cudahy, California, and Keith Black was the foremost builder of Chrysler Hemi engines.
