    Darlington is a speedway on the NASCAR race circuit. The preferred racing line through the turns was close as possible to the outside wall. At the time of the picture, the outside wall was steel guide rail. The Darlington stripe were scrapes and dents on the right rear of the car which testified to the fact you were riding the highest (fastest) way around the track. Given Richard Petty's successes at that track, he always got his Darlington stripe along the right side of the car early in the race.
