Another good one, Rootie- Bruce Townsend's TXP, a beautiful Crosley engined special- Midwest, late 50s. Still exists in original unrestored condition.

This is kind of a neat shot. It appears to be Jim Hall helping out on a transaxle problem on the A.J. / Hussein car. Back in those days, when racing was still a sport and not a business, racers were often more interested in putting on a good show for the fans with a full field than selling cars, tires, oil, etc. 7-21-6.JPG

That gas station is still standing and has recently been restored (after years of sitting neglected) and is now a Route 66 Museum, on Foothill Blvd, just west of Archibald and directly across from McDonalds (which has been remodeled to resemble the gas station.

  21. I would have enjoyed going to Grauman's during its heyday !

    Hey CJ,

That photo is a big part of So Cal history as far as Route 66 is concerned. A while back in May, I added a post to a history of Richfield Towers including gas station towers in So Cal. I remember this photo popping up, but alas, it did not have a tall tower. A little research through historic archives describes this Richfield Gas Station in Rancho Cuca****a as one of the historic sites along Route 66.

Located on Foothill Blvd, (Route 66) the local Channel 7 News program highlighted this gas station in a blurb about losing its historic funding.

The name of the city is remembered by fans of comedian and radio personality, Jack Benny, who would often hear a train announcement made by Mel Blanc calling out: "Train leaving on track five for Anaheim, Azusa and Cuca****a!"

Back then, adults and little kids would always wonder, where the heck is Cuca****a? Now we know.
