California Street in San Francisco, 1964

    Hey MMM,
This gorgeous photo was taken by famous American photographer, Todd Walker back in 1964. In the photo is California Street, which is one of the longest streets running through San Francisco and is actually the last leg in the Lincoln Highway, which was the first road across America.

As a reward for learning how to drive a 5 speed stick, my wife and I went to SF for a vacation and she drove the whole way, including this up and down road in the downtown area. Once you learn the "brake start pattern and technique," no hill or slope is too hard for a stick shift driver.

She was pretty fabulous going up/down these streets with heavy traffic and anxious SF drivers. Not one mistake...but she did mention that she was "sweating bullets" (and had white knuckles) until we got to our hotel. Ha !

    Yup.

And that's kind of a strange photo since it was taken in 1960. It's surprising that Hurtubise was shaking down someone else's car as a Rookie. His own Travelon Trailer roadster must have been unavailable at the time for some reason. And he wouldn't have been allowed to practice in another car if he had not already successfully passed his Rookie Test.

And I think that looks like Floyd Trevis with his hand on the windshield.

There must be a story here.

It is, with Ralph Ligouri up at Sacto 1966. As it was Ligouri went on to relieve Tattersall in the 84 after the 35 gave up.
