I'm keen to run a new Winters QC in my 34 Ford 3wdw coupe. It'll have a '54 331ci Hemi bored to 354ci with hopefully over 300fwhp. I also want the option to pop a blower on later so I want a strong driveline. So who is running a Winters QC and which type did you go with? Sent from my SM-G900I using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm running a Winters V8 rear in both my deuce roadster and deuce pu. The V8's are good to 550 hp and probably more. I built a deuce RPU lakester with a Winters champ rear, sold it and the customer has about 40,000 on it with no problems. The champ is good to about 850 hp. I've lost count on how many Winters QC's I've sold with no problems.
Winters magnesium under my '34. Aluminum Frankland under my Model A. As long as you are talking about the full size quick change, you won't hurt it, even if you are looking at the smaller V-8 style, you most likely won't hurt it either. Go ahead and stick one under there, you will love it, I promise. Good luck, -Abone.
Now those are HOTRODS !!! I am putting a Winter's Champ with 40 bells behind my blown 354 Hemi. Love the look. I have a magnesium center now but want to change it out for aluminum to get away from all the polishing.
I have a V8 Center Kit with stock Banjo axles. Its a Mike Spadaro set up. Looks cool but I wouldn't put more than 200HP to it.
Ive got a winters champ in my model a and I love the thing. The locker is a love hate relationship though. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
will the winters champ rear hold up to a 2000 - 2500 pound car, 500 hp, 10" slicks & a sticky drag strip?
Good question, I do plan on doing some quarter mile racing at intervals. Thanks all for their responses so far Sent from my SM-G900I using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm in a similar situation, what width axle are people using ? I have a 34 5 window with a 5" ish channel I'm worried the 57/58" suggested by hotrod works is to narrow for my application ?
I'm new to the whole quick change in street car deal, but have been building race cars my whole life. What's different with these and like a an asphalt late model? I know the Sprint are different, but not that different. We have several customers running 900+ rwhp in road race cars with no issues. I picked up a Franklyn about a year ago, but I am going old school on this one so maybe 200rwhp outta my flattie if I'm lucky. Sent from my XT1585 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm probably a quick change bigot but there is only one Quickchange for a hot rod & it's a Halibrand! I have the V8 & champs & the Legacy Ted Halibrand left is plenty good for me! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My quickchange was built by Winters but originally sold as a Stock Car Products(SCP) item to a local roundy round racer that ran this rearend for one race season at Langley. Not that evident in the pictures but it is a big sucker. I bought it, disc brakes, locker and all; and put it under my Chevrolet with a kit from Chassis Engineering. Whines big time and the locker will keep you on your toes but I like it and have had it in the car since 1995. Bought a set of 3.90 gears to swap out with the 3.11 gears I'm running... ain't changed 'em yet and probably won't. I even put a marine access port in bottom of trunk floor to facilitate switching the gears more easily... great planning, I guess, but the big block with a tunnel ram gives plenty of performance without being aided by lower gearing.
You can put together a used race 301 Halibrand that will take more abuse for less money. The QC centers sell for around 300-350 and often include a ring and pinion set. Contact Bruce here on the HAMB, as QCE (quickchange exchange) for his excellent side plate adapters to Ford banjo bells and a machined differential to tie it all together. Hot Rod Works for their axle ends, get a pair of F150-31 spline axles and have your local machine shop shorten the bells to your desired width, weld on the new ends and respline the axles. That is how I'm building one for my 34. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I run a Champ Q/C with a locker been in my car for 20 yrs, this month Speedway Motors ib Sylmar Ca is replacing the locker with a DPI Black Gold Differential, should make it a lot less snap, crackle and pop on the turns, also running polished helical cut gear set less noisy too.
Ditto - the diff I'm replacing is already at 58in so I'm going to need wider. Winters standard size is 56in which is far too small for my '34 application. I had a good look at the Winters info last night and there's quite a few options. I like the look of the nostalgia V8 quick change (no ribs) but had read that it can only handle 300hp. That was back in 2010 so it maybe better now? I think I'll contact Winters and see what they recommend.
Hotrod works will build any width you want with 9" half shafts and a wedge lock diff, but I don't know what to go for it's 61" at the moment but could be narrower but 56" is way to narrow
Does anyone happen to have an email address for Winters? I have a few questions that I can't seem to find the answers for anywhere else. I'll stick 'em on here anyway: - can you buy direct from Winters? - what are the V8 plain nostalgia q/cs rated at (I can only find old info, that doesn't seem too relevant to currently made qcs) - more info on the drum brake kits they offer Thanks all
have a franklin champ rear in my 34 w/boss 429 eng, no problem. bought it new from old man Jim Franklin in 1975 for $600.00. was running final ratio 3.21, switched to about 2.40+-, dont remember , was 25 yrs ago, but couldn't tell the diff. way i drive on the street. is a hot rod w/metal interior and is so noisey in that you can't hear the radio, havent turned it on in 24 years, call it HOWLIN WOLF.
I have a Winters champ style under my 34. Local roundy round race shop sole me a good used posi carrier...don't remember the brand. Mine uses a 4.86 R&P with axle tubes from another stock car race shop, "cut to fit" 31 spline axle shafts and brakes from a 68 Merc monterey sedan.
I have a Winters "Champ" setup similar to the above (post 23) in my 54 Studebaker Conestoga (2dr. wagon). Only mine has Ford disc brakes. Been under the car for a few years now, nary a problem. Mike
Decide it was the only way to go, plus Summit had a great deal on the nostalgia V8 quick change, plus the width was just what I needed.
Great build you got going, I really like "in the raw" construction shots like this. Good on ya for being proud of building a glass bodied car and sharing it with us like minded types.
