Overheard a guy explaining how rare the engine is in my T bucket. 'They only made a few of these Offy engines, ya know.' (It had a Merc flatty with Offy heads.)

after reading this thread I will be sure to never speak with anyone who is at an event like a rodeo or something I am not familiar with, seems I would be labeled an idiot for having no knowledge of what they think is cool.

It's ok to ask questions if you are actually interested in having a conversation with the car owner and learning about their car.
What's not ok is asking rude questions or pointing out what you think is wrong or what you don't like about their car.

At a rodeo you wouldn't ask a bull rider why they couldn't stay on the bull, but you could ask what is it about that particular bull that makes him so difficult to ride

  11. Asking questions (even if they make me giggle) is all good, happy to answer - acting like an expert... thats a different game... One of my favorites to date " I bet that had a hood over the engine originally, not practical the way it is", I just said " you know, I wondered about that, I'll have to look it up & see if it did, that's a good point", But the one that got under my skin is a simple comment made at a gas station "cool car, ... is that a stone chip on the windshield?" - I confirmed there was indeed a stone chip & then attended to filling up my car thinking "really... really, thats what you needed to point out on a survivor hot rod built over 50 years ago ? ... a stone chip - ha ha

The other day I was getting some gas and a guy walked up and asked if the T was a kit car.
I said nope. it was custom build from parts...not a kit.
Then he said...but it is a VW engine, right?

I said no...it's a Chevy 454. The question was so oddball it actually startled me!
I should have just said yes and went on my way! :D

He was just being friendly though and was at least interested...LoL

  15. Not exactly cruise night material but these are forever embedded in my memory so I'll share.

My best friend's father has a mid thirties Topolino that was built in the sixties and it's pretty much exactly as it has been since then, red, sotted mags, roll bar, black vinyl, 327. We were at a small festival car show back in the mid-nineties and we were sitting in my 58 Fairlane parked next to the Fiat when two old guys, who were probably in their seventies and should've known better, walked over and stood in front of the Fiat. First guy says, "Do you know what it is?" Second guy, "Not really. Old Volkswagen I think." First guy, "It looks like he just went out to a junkyard and bought up a bunch of crap and took it home and put it together." Second guy, "Yep." As they walked away we just exploded into laughter. My buddy's dad said, "That's exactly how it got built!"

When I bought my '57 Eldorado I stopped for fuel somewhere near Joplin and this guy comes over and walks around the trailer, giving the car a look over, then proceeds to ask me what year my BUICK is. After I told him it was a 57 I politely informed him that it was a Cadillac and not a Buick...sob pops off "I know what it is, my parents had a 57 Buick just like it." I said "Well they didn't have one like this because this is a Cadillac, not a Buick!"

  17. Sad but true, one lady (not bad looking...) was all over my Ford and she talked the talk for sure. Her husband (he should be cock-blocked...) with the kid in the stroller stroller asked if the body was fiberglass or steel.

First time I took it to get gas, the cashier excitedly told me, "I know exactly what kind of car that is!"

I'm impressed. "Okay, what is it?"

She hesitates for a few seconds, then says, "It's one of those cars they take dead people to the cemetery in!"

    I just had to laugh... wagon_fortworth016 (1).jpg

I had a 57 Courier for several years, dark brown with a few spots of red oxide primer. I can't tell you how many people (even a counter girl at a 7-11) asked me, "Hey, were'd you get that Hurst?", or "Is that your Hurst?". The dumb shits didn't even know how to say hearse. I'd usually try to explain that it was built as a delivery car for groceries, or flowers, etc., but most of them didn't believe me or even give a shit. It was a "Hurst" to them.

  26. ......That's funny. There's a guy that runs around here with a septic truck with one of those clear Lexan bug deflectors on the leading edge of the hood. He's had someone letter it with the name, "Terd Hurst"! It's catchy I admit but, if you're going to get the name of your truck painted, get a sign painter that not only can letter it nicely, but can spell as well. After all, he got both words wrong!

  27. I was getting gas last summer and a young man approached me, looked at the car...and said, "I thought this was a station wagon at first, but then I saw that it says 'Rambler' on it. Nice"
I had no idea what exactly he meant so I just thanked him.

My 62 is styled like a late 60's MP car and has a fuel cell in the trunk. Had a guy ask where I put the groceries when I go shopping.

Local Taco shop has a pro painted sign on a big arrow at their driveway spelled "enterance" Just down the road at a vacancy is a vinyl sign on the building "store for leace". Then there's the two guys I see driving around in a big stake truck loaded with pallets and scrap metal with a pro painted sign on the doors that says "pallet and metal scrapers".
Hope to ask them one day how much they charge to scrape metal.

Back to the questions. I love overhearing when someone seriously asks what kind of mileage someone gets with their Hot Rod.
