Hello, can anyone tell me about the different kind of flatheads out there for the 59ab motors. I got my hands on a couple sets for very cheap and I am trying to figure out which ones to use. I got the weiand S and the FR sets. Also have a complete set of edmunds and then a mitch match of edmunds. [IMG]

    Which set fits?

  3. I would just choose a set by what the gasket face looks like, if they are straight and have the correct number of bolts ( 24) just bolt 'em on and run 'em. You won't see enough difference in power to make it worth wondering which are the best.

f you want a personal opinion I like the Edmonds. :D

Okay.. thank you I appreciate it!! They are all really straight with no corrosion. One is going to be wall art it's cracked but there is a local guy who rebuilds them but it's a little pricey so I will wait.

I wonder how much nitrous one could take?

But do they FIT? You need to check clearance above the valves and pistons before you tighten them down. Really easy way to do a preliminary check is to set the head on the engine loose over the stud, with no gaskets. Turn the engine over by hand and see if a valve or piston raises the head. If so, probably not enough clearance when the gasket is used.

Actual engine builders will hopefully chime in with some required clearance numbers soon.

  8. Never mind, someone will read something else on the web and make my tolerance wrong.

They might bolt up but you have to check clearance. I ran 8CM's on my 8BA. They fit but weren't the right ones even though I got good compression. You can place almost any head on any flathead motor but it doesn't mean a thing if you don't have the proper clearance.

There are large bore and regular bore heads.

    Measure and double check.

Well I placed them on the engine without bolting down and turned over the motor. Nothing moved and there wasn't any marks on the inside of the heads. But when I drop the engine off to get magna fluxed and cleaned I will have the machine shop check the tolerances!!! Thanks guys

Personally, I would run the Edmunds ones for the cool factor.

Nothing wrong with the "Why-And" ones, though.

Could also have too much of a space between the piston the valves and the head.

You're right in having everything checked by a pro.

Also make sure you allow / check for the depth of the spark plugs - even if you have piston to head and valve to head clearance you still might have not enough clearance for the spark plug. You might need to space the plug out with indexing spacers or similar.

I had a set of plugs when I first started my sedan's engine up that got their electrodes smashed by the valves. I forget which brand they were. Just trying different brands can make a big difference. Hold one brand up to another and see the lengths.
