Corn Head grease is also good for use in lubricating the coupling in a closed driveshaft.

Super cool that you ended up with this car -- I've enjoyed seeing the updates!

  5. I saw that as well! Thanks Joe.

Thanks Nick! I'm pretty stoked to have it!

  6. Saturday was rainy so I got to spend some time in the shop instead of the yard. I dove into getting the carbs apart and cleaned up for rebuilding. I kind of want them to retain their current "patina" (sorry) so as to not look too out of place with the rest of the finishes on the roadster so I didn't soda blast them or anything. They seem to be in pretty good shape but missing some parts. IMG_3450.JPG

  7. We are fortunate to have in our little town a place called Baxter's Early Ford parts. They are a Stromberg dealer and a few emails back and forth and Bob had all the parts assembled that I needed! He even saved me some money by substituting good used parts if he had them. On top of that he stayed open a little late to give me enough time to get there after work. Good folks!

Hopefully I'll find some time this week to get the carbs reassembled.

  9. I have a blast cabinet but I haven't plumbed or wired the shop for it yet! (Lazy)
I did make some progress today though. I got the carbs all cleaned up and reassembled. The two end carbs have the chokes locked open as per Stromberg's recommendation when using in a tri-power as they say they are designed to use the chokes help airflow.

I didn't want them to look new so I wire wheeled them on the bench grinder and got the nooks and crannies with a wire brush and also a small cup brush with my flex-shaft. I coated them with some Krylon "Crystal Clear Acrylic" as I've had good luck with it in the past on some other projects. I like it because they look uncoated due to the matte finish.

Next I think I'll soak and pump up the lifters with some oil so I can re-install the heads and get this thing fired up soon!

  10. I spent some time yesterday cleaning up the intake and sorting out some bad threads and stuff. I bought an Eelco linkage kit off eBay since it never had one and set it up progressively/ tentatively.

    IMG_3541.JPG
I took the water neck off the 4Bbl intake that was on the car originally as it has some of the blue sparkly paint left on it. One of the little details on this car that I love are all the little chrome acorn nut covers. They are on the backing plates, tie rod ends, a couple on the trans adapter bolts, torque tube bolts, etc. I polished the ones that were on the thermostat housing and stuck them back on.
I also cleaned up the chrome on the air cleaners.

The fuel lines had a bunch of spattered paint (well everything did actually) and most of it came off too. I love that blue tubing!

  18. We went to the HAMB Drags this weekend so no progress on the Button. I did just order a set of lifters from Egge Machine though after finding several that were pretty stuck. I've had them soaking in MMO for a week with no result. I was going to pull them apart and try to free them up but I was cautioned against that and for $11 each it's a "you might as well" situation. Oh well it's only money right?

The longer this thread runs, the better it gets, so good to see you trying to preserve the build as it was.

I'm late to the party but will definitely be watching this one.
Let me know if you need any Olds parts I might have laying around...

  23. Geez...Martin, where you been? Haven't seen much of you lately.

  25. Thanks man I appreciate it! I'm trying to repair rather than replace wherever I can. I started in on the stuck wheel cylinders last night. What a mess! They're in pretty good shape once they are honed so hopefully I can reuse them.

Hi Martin! I was wondering when the rest of the Olds guys were gonna show up, ha! Thanks for the offer!

Fifty years ago, I had 6 97s on my roadster. One of the floats stuck one night. I kept cranking and pumping 'till the puddle on the manifold lit off and did a bunch of damage. I was lucky I didn't have plastic fuel lines or it would have been much worse. Sure are purdy. You might reconsider.

  27. Believe me I COMPLETELY understand what you are saying and appreciate the warning. I have hard lines on my truck for just that reason. However, while not my first choice, the plastic lines are what it was originally built with so they will remain. I have entertained "sleeving" some hard line with the plastic tubing as well. I have more on the way with which to experiment. Thank you for the insight and concern!

Good stuff for sure- I really like your approach to "freshening" it up keeping the "old" look. Nice tail lights too!!

Yes, Bob @ Baxter Ford Parts will personally answer phone & get you parts fast.
I have no personal interests, other than I (& many other traditional hot rodders) have had excellent service & want a business like his to stay successful for a long time.

  30. Thanks @mike bowling!

Yes @Bam.inc, good folks at Baxter's! I hauled ass home from work Thursday so I could swing by there in time to grab a couple of brake cylinder rebuilds, master cylinder rebuild, and some grease seals. My lifters from Egge showed up as well so I've got plenty to work on this weekend once I finish my chores!
