Excellent post. I was too lazy to try to educate someone on who Lloyd was and you did a great job.

The black Epperly roadster, Bryant Heating and Cooling Special and later Hoover Motor Express Special, has to go down in history as one of the most beautiful Indy cars ever built. Bobby Marshman in the seat as the Bryant car and Eddie Sachs in its Hoover days. I think Don Branson was also among the car's drivers.

The mechanic with his back to the camera is Billy Earl, the person who helped turn me into the miscreant curmudeonish dirty old man that I am today.

He told me the following story: Sachs had no sense of what a car needed if the handling was off, but was very vocal about the fact that it wasn't to his liking. After a practice session Sachs pulls in, crawls out of the car and says something to the effect of " This POS ain't handling , fix it " and walks off. So they take the car back to the garage where Sachs has planted himself on a work bench. They jack the car up and Billy crawls under the rear with whatever wrench first came to hand and proceeds to beat on the fuel tank a few times loudly enough that Eddie could hear, crawls out and proclaims the problem fixed. Never touched a bolt. They take the car back out, practice it again and when Sachs comes back in he says " I don't know what you guys did, but the car is a thousand times better than the last practice session ".
