Vintage shots from days gone by!

Pretty rare to see one in any form nowadays short of a national Safari convention.
I remember a guy having a couple when I was in high school about 1970, most of us Chevy guys thought he was a bit odd for it.

 

The dude that's smiling said, "Yeah I don't think this is going to buff out!"

 

Usually now you see trucks like this with trees growing out of them.

 

"He said she saw a red light at the Broadway intersection and prepared to stop behind a utility truck pulling the pole. "She said she misjudged the length of the pole."

It came through the windshield directly in front of the driver's seat, breaking the steering wheel. Mrs. Wooldridge was in its path but just at the right second she apparently leaned to the right, out of the pole's path.

"She said she was not conscious of doing anything to keep from being hit," Mrs. Woodridge said. But he said his wife had developed the habit of leaning in front of the youngest child, Todd, who is almost 2, when there is any danger of him falling from the seat where he usually stands. "This is probably what happened. Todd was standing next to her."

Mr. Wooldridge said the pole apparently passed over his wife's left shoulder, leaving what is believed to be a slight skin burn. She was mostly injured from the flying glass from the windshield suffering no serious injuries, Mr. Wooldridge said.

The pole penetrated the Wooldridge four-door sedan four feet, Mr. Wooldridge said. The pole stopped in the back seat area where the oldest son, Jon, who is 6, usually sits.

He had asked to sit in the front seat next to the right door that morning, and his mother had granted the request."

 

I think the car is an Airflow, but what are the cabs? Are these the GM taxi's. The other pictures a few pages back didn't have those headlights. Cool that they are Town Sedans.

And here's the chauffeur-driven passenger version - the Town Car. Most were 1929 models but a few were produced in early 1930. The delivery was produced as a 1931 model but a few probably were built in late 1930 and maybe early 1932. Although the Town Car was a Ford, it was sold (not very successfully) through Lincoln dealers - why would a wealthy customer buy a chauffeured Ford when they could afford a Lincoln? Some dealers eventually converted Town Cars to taxis or 4-door sedans just to be able to sell them. The deliveries probably sold a little better, but still not great. They were classy but expensive - a Ford Panel Delivery could do the same job but was cheaper.

Both the Town Car and the delivery had roll-up windows and a snap-on top for the driver compartment.

It had built-in camping equipment - fold-down bed, icebox, water tank, etc. Both were low-production 1931-only models and unlike Ford Station Wagons, had roll-up windows and locking doors.

 

Quite a few of the town cars had a cloth top for the driver's cabin.
